Travel information

• Do not shoot private or religious activities in Tibetan areas unless permission is granted.
• The temperature difference between morning and evening in the plateau area is above 15°C. It is recommended to prepare some warm clothes.
• In the highland area, the sunshine is strong, and the ultraviolet rays are strong. During long periods of outdoor activities, wear a sun hat and apply suncream to protect the skin.

Destination sketch

This small mountain city is at an altitude of 2600m (8,530 ft) and offers a welcome relief from the pollution and overcrowding of the larger cities of the Sichuan plain. By far the largest city in Western Sichuan it is mainly ethnically Han Chinese with a notable Tibetan presence and flair, particular in its shops, restaurants and the lama local temple. For centuries it has been the meeting place of many cultures and therefore is home to memorial to the Tea Horse Road. It serves as kind of last outpost before the wild Tibetan mountains and passes of the Chengdu-Lhasa highway and the historical Tibetan region of Khamba. The views of the neighboring alpine peaks down the river are spectacular.

Local life

Local herdsmen often eat Zanba, butter, milk, yoghurt, beef, and dairy food, and tea is an indispensable beverage.

Beliefs and taboos

When you meet temple, Mani stone piles, white pagoda and other religious facilities, you must circle it from the left to side. When entering the temple, avoid smoking, touching Buddha statues, turning books, and hitting the bell.

The Tibetan people in the Kangding area will hold a grand mountain meeting to commemorate the birth of Buddha Shakyamuni.

Popular in Kham. The annual festival that be held in August and will last for one day every year.

Best Travel season

The prefecture enjoys a plateau monsoon climate, and the Garze weather is complicated and varies in accordance with the spatial variation, such as the differentiation of altitude, terrain and latitude. The annual average temperature of most regions is below 8℃ (46.4℉). Spring (April to May) is the best season for appreciating flowers scattered all around the mountains in the fresh air, while for photographers, autumn is the best time to grasp the colorful scenery. If visitors expect to see the snow-capped plateau, they should make a trip during November and December. It is suggested to not travel here in January and February for snow may block the way to mountains.

Kangding Airport Kangding Airport, KGT
The highest point of altitude is 4280 meters. It is the third highest altitude airport in the world. At present, there are two routes from China Eastern Airlines and Sichuan Airlines to Chengdu and Chongqing. The airport is suspended every winter.

Way of arrival
There are no buses and regular taxis around Kangding Airport. Travelers can take the airport bus to Kangding County and drive for about 1 hour. The urban airport ticket center provides a shuttle bus service. The bus departs at around 6am. Taxi to start at 100 yuan.

There is a shuttle bus to Ganzi at 10:00 every day, and the fare is 255 yuan.

Bus

There are three bus lines in Kangding City. The bus fares for Roads 1 and 2 are RMB 1 yuan, the bus fare for Road 3 is RMB 2 yuan, and the last bus is 19:00.

Taxi

The starting price of taxis in the county is 5 yuan (1 km), the unit price is 1.2 yuan per kilometer, the urban area is not big, taxis generally do not exceed 10 yuan.

Attractions

Paoma Mountain Scenic Area

Located on the edge of the city of Kangding, Paoma Mountain is the branch of the Big snow Mountain and is about 2700 meters above sea level. It is one of the famous mountain of the Tibetan people. Lingyun white pagoda is built on the top of the west hill of Paoma Mountain flat. It is more than 20 meters high and it is very spectacular.

Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum

The museum has three floors. The first floor exhibition halls are basically displayed as Tibetan national costumes, Tibetan folk houses, farming series, Mani stone sculptures, cattle cashmere weaving, car models, pottery showrooms and shopping halls; the second floor is for thousands of Thangka exhibition halls; the third floor is a national singing and dancing auditorium, which fully reflects Ganzi’s intangible cultural heritage and is a window to display Ganzi’s traditional ethnic culture.

Mugecuo

Also called the Wild Man Lake, Mugecuo Lake, with an altitude of 12,140 feet (3,700 meters), is a large plateau lake. The water surface covers about 741 acres (three square kilometers) and the deepest point is more than 230 feet (70 Meters) below the sea level. The lake is surrounded by pines, cedars, and rhododendron trees on three sides and neighboring the vast Tagong Grassland on the rest side. With unpolluted water and lush vegetation, the lake and its surrounding areas are commonly vitalized by Wild animals, like goats, ducks, deer and grouse.

Rhododendron Valley

It is a gorgeous belt traversing the scenic area. More than 68 kinds of rhododendrons are growing here. When all the rhododendrons are in blossom, the valley becomes a world of flowers. The flower season usually lasts from the late April to July.

Seven-Color Lake

It is also a plateau lake. The lake surface takes the shape of a crescent, covering approximately 49 acres (20 hectares). The tones of the lake vary among seven colors according to weather conditions, hence its name. In the morning, the lake Is as clear as a bright mirror, reflecting the blue sky, white fleecy clouds and snow-capped mountains. When the sun is setting in the evening, the shimmering lake resembles a beauty wearing a golden veiling. The temperature of the Seven-Color Lake Can rise up to 153 °F (67 °C), making it an excellent spa resort.

Yaochi Feiquan

Single chimney springs with medical effects. Containing lots of trace elements beneficial to health, the springs have distinctive medical effects on eye diseases, gastrosia, and rheumatism. One unique spring, originating from rocks, is named Stomach Nursing Spring by the local The people. It is said that by drinking the water, your stomach will be invigorated. The temperature of this spring can reach 194 °F (90 °C), providing the perfect conditions for making the special snack Beancurd Jelly Egg.

Buddha’s warrior attendant Monastery

The Kangding Buddha’s warrior attendant Monastery was built in 1272 AD. A small temple built under the foot of the Paoma Mountain and built in Ningma school style, is the predecessor of the Kangding Buddha’s warrior attendant Monastery Temple.

Shuijingzi

Located in the foothills of the Paoma Mountain, in the city of Kangding, the spring comes from the five colored sea and emerges from the foot of the Paoma Mountain. The spring water is crystal clear. Tagong Grassland

Tagong is located in the historical Kham region of eastern Tibet; Most of those in Tagong’s over 40 population are draped in baggy colorful robes that have a vintage look only achieved by wearing the same garment everyday for years. The women weave colorful pink and purple fabric into their thick braids, while men holster foot long knives at their waist.
Tagong monastery: known as “the small Lhasa Jokhang Monastery”,  Tagong Temple is a nice example of a typical Tibetan monastery, with its statues, painted walls, thangkas, incents smells and plenty of monks dressed in their carmine robes.

Xinduqiao

Located 437km away from chengdu and 83km away from Kangding, Xinduqiao is a plateau land (at an altitude of 3300m) described as “the paradise of photography”, featuring magic sunlight and incredible beautiful natural sceneries of twisting streams, endless grassland, rolling leaves dotted With colorful trees and Tibetan villages.

Juli Monastery

The nearest Tibetan temple in Xinduqiao has hundreds of monks.
