The city lies in the southern part of Shandong Province, at the convergence of Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Anhui. It is bordered by the famous ‘peony town’, Heze City. Xuzhou City of Jiangsu Province lies south of the city, and it is separated by the Yellow River from Liaocheng City in the northwest corner. Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province, is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Jining.
Primitive villages were scattered around this region five or six thousand years ago. After the unification of China by the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), Rencheng County was established here. Jining, as the name of the administrative unit set up here, first appeared in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

Confucius

was a Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history.

The philosophy of Confucius, also known as Confucianism, emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. His followers competed successfully with many other schools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era only to be suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty. Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Qin, Confucius’s thoughts received official sanction and were further developed into a system known in the West as Neo-Confucianism, and later New Confucianism (Modern Neo-Confucianism).

Bearing a warm temperate monsoon climate, the region has abundant solar energy. Summer is hot and gathers much rainfall, while most days in winter are clear and chilly. The annual average temperature of Jining weather ranges from 13.3C to 14.1C (55.9 F to 57.4 F). Spring, summer and autumn are best months for sightseeing.

Consumption level

Jining’s consumption level is moderate. Qufu’s attractions are more expensive, and the most famous Qufu three-kong ticket is RMB 150. The price of accommodation is not high, and accommodation is in Jining City or downtown Qufu. The price of a budget hotel room is around RMB 100-150. Jining’s dishes is around RMB 40-50 per person.

The traffic in Jining City is very convenient. There are many lines for travelling. Because the attractions are concentrated, Jining’s bus lines can basically cover most of the scenic spots and are convenient.

Taxi

Jining taxi costs 6 yuan and 2 kilometers (including 1 yuan fuel), 2 kilometers, within 4 kilometers is 1.3 yuan / km, 4 kilometers away is 1.95 yuan a kilometer, waiting for 5 minutes plus 1.3 yuan, There is also a nightly charge, which adds 0.2 yuan per kilometer from 22:00 to 5:00 in the morning.

Baoxiang Temple

A well-preserved Buddhist temple more than a thousand years old, where a great many holy Buddha relics were excavated in 1994; the annual Buddha Light Festival (Fo Guang Jie) is held in the temple.

Daizhuang Catholic Church

Daizhuang Catholic Church was originally a villa of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty painters Dai Jian. From 1887 to 1896, the German missionaries An Zhitai and Fu Joseph changed it to a church in Daizhuang.

Beihu Tourism Resort

Qufu City

Yan Temple (Temple of Yan Hui)

Yan Temple is located in the north of Louxiang Street of Qufu City and can easily be reached by crossing a street from the rear garden of Kong Family Mansion. It was built for Yan Hui (521-481BC), one of the great disciples of the sage. People say that Yan Hui enjoyed great popularity among people for his virtues although he lived in a humble lane. He was conferred an honored title of Fusheng Gong in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), so the temple is also called Fusheng Temple.

The temple was built when Liu Bang, the first emperor of the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), held a memorial ceremony for the sage and Yan Hui. It was originally located in the northeast corner of Qufu City. In 1594, Yan Temple was rebuilt in style of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) architecture on the site of Yan Hui’s former residence.

Confucius Six Arts City (Liu Yi Cheng)

Confucius Six Arts City (also called Confucius’s Six Classical Arts Hall), located at No.15, Chunqiu Road, Nanxin District, Qufu City, is a theme park displaying the thought, teaching and life of Confucius (551-479BC) (an ideologist and educator in ancient China, and the great founder of Confucianism) and the folk culture of ancient Lu State. It is so named, because the six arts (ritual, music, archery, driving, calligraphy and mathematics) were advocated and taught by the sage.

The scenic spot encompasses an area of 13ha with a distinctive and magnificent architectural complex. Inside the gate is a large group of bronze sculptures. Behind it, there is an impressive building – the sphere-shaped Mathematics Hall, where visitors can use all kinds of electronic game machines to solve different mathematics puzzles. The halls of the other five arts surround the Mathematics Hall. Music Hall and Archery Hall are on its left side; Driving Hall and Calligraphy Hall on its right side; the Ritual Hall is at its front. The six arts are shown vividly by employing modern techniques of sound, light and electricity. Following a visit here, tourists will more fully understand the six arts and ancient culture of the Pre-Qin Period.

Mencius Family Mansion & Mencius Temple

Mencius Family Mansion: Chinese people take Confucius and Mencius as the two sages in Confucianism. Mencius was a thinker, educator, politician and essayist in the Warring States Periods (476BC-221BC). He carried Confucianism forward and developed his own complete ideological system.

If you were impressed by the grandiose Kong Family Mansion, you should not miss the Mencius Family Mansion located in Zoucheng City in Shandong Province, home to the descendants of Mencius for dynasties. The mansion is oblong in shape, measuring 247 yards (226 metres) long and 108 yards (97 metres) wide. It was constructed during the late Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) or thereabouts. The house has seven courtyards and features the Grand Hall in front, the inner sanctum in the middle and the garden at the rear. There are 148 buildings including various halls, towers and pavilions distributed orderly along the central axis.
