During the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), many nomadic tribes in North China settled in the vast grassland of Hulunbuir. Today, it is still the homeland of more than thirty ethnic minorities. In 2001, Hulunbuir’s status was changed from a league to a city.

Hulunbuir Prairie, or Hulun Buir Grassland, located in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, is the superbly untouched prairie in China. Hulunbuir Prairie is among the three great prairies in the world, termed “the kingdom of pasture”. The prairie covers 100 thousand sq km (39 thousand sq mi) of some 3,000 interwoven rivers and 500 dotted lakes. It is a pleasure for the eyes to see the land and what it holds. Place name Hulunbuir Prairie origins from the Hulun Lake and the Buir Lake. Hulun means otter and Buir means male otter in Mongolian, as the two lakes used to be teeming with otters.
Mergel Gol River is reputed as “the first winding river in the world”. The river is very narrow but meanders. From the sky, the river is like a blue ribbon in the green prairie. Mergel Gol River is not only famous for the its course changes, but also for the inconsistent depths. When shallow, the river just comes over your feet; when at 3 m (10 ft)-deep, lots of fish can be seen.
The Golden Horde, located in the middle-west of Hulunbuir Prairie, is a nomadic Mongolian scenic spot. This area is a herd grazing pasture from times of old. Between the end of the 12th century and the early 13th century, Genghis Khan united all tribes and occupied Hulunbuir Prairie. The layout of the Golden Horde is a replica of Genghis Khan’s own tent. The Golden tents are their signature housing on the move, including Khan Shatyr, military tents and for noblemen.
Hulun Lake, west of Hulunbuir Prairie, is first among lakes in Inner Mongolia. The lake presents beautiful scenery and dwellers with their colorful folk customs. You can also take part in horse riding, eating all-mutton banquet, boating and fishing. From July to August, visitors may watch fish leaping up the river linked Hulun Lake to Buir Lake.

The Hailar National Forest Park is situated in the western suburb of Hailar and originally known as Hailaer Xishan Forest Park, only 2 kilometers away from the downtown Hailar. The most feature of the Hailar National Forest Park is that it is the only state-level forest park with Mongolian scotch pines as the main body in China. The park covers an area of 147 square kilometers, being divided into four parts: the southern part, the northern part, the western part and the reserved resource area.
The Hailar National Forest Park of course hold many natural wonders, towering pines, seemingly endless field of grass, however the southern part also hold significance for contemporary China with the Japanese army passing through the park during the Second World War. There are some battlements built by the Chinese used for repelling Japan’s invasion in 1934 which were subsequently destroyed in 1945. The development of the park as a tourist attraction has been rapid with the construction of the Hailar Exhibition Center, a restaurant offering folk cuisines, a zoo, botanical gardens and the opening of several peaks for tourists. Besides, the southern park is also famous for being the site of the cultural relics in the Microlithic Age.

Argun River is a branch of the Heilongjiang River, sourced by the Hailaer River. From 1689 a treaty signed between Russia and China made it a boundary river. The Argun River stretches over 1620 kilometers and brings life to a large area of north-eastern China. The areas around the river-banks are lush and rich and the home to several species of fish and wild animals, as well as being home to farmland and a thriving agricultural industry.
The favorable conditions in this river-land has given raise to several ethnic minorities and in ancient times inhabited by the ancient tribes of nomadic Mongolian herders. It was until much later that the Mongolian Khan finally conquered the region and left his younger brother to rule over it, the ruins of the palace that was built there still stands to this day.
