This is the junction of Gansu, Xinjiang, and Qinghai. The landforms are mostly Gobi, deserts, and mountains. Dunhuang is located on the ancient Silk Road and once had prosperous business activities. White horse pagoda

The pagoda boasts of a time-honored history. It was built in memory of a loyal white horse owned by Kumarajiva, a master specializing in Buddhism. It is said that in 384, Fu Jian, the founder of the Former Qin Regime (350 – 394), invited Kumarajiva from the western regions to central China to spread Buddhism scriptures.

Mogao Caves

The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The first caves were dug out in 366 AD as places of Buddhist meditation and worship.
There are a total of 492 caves in the Mogao Grottoes, but only a dozen visitors can visit. These dozens of caves are boutiques for the caves from the Beiliang Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty, and some special caves need to be book ticket separately.

Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring

Mingsha Mountain is called Shajiao Mountain, also known as Shensha Mountain. When visitors descended on the mountain, the sand roared with the sound of roar, hence the name “Mingsha Mountain.” Mingshashan sand has five colors: red, yellow, green, black and white. It is called “five sand.” Five-color sand surrounded by a crescent-shaped pond – Crescent Moon Spring, the spring does not dry in the sand, there are iron back fish, seven-star grass grow here, Crescent spring also known as “the first spring of the desert”.

Dunhuang Ancient City

Yumen pass

It is the name of a pass of the Great Wall located west of Dunhuang in today’s Gansu Province of China. During the Han dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD), this was a pass through which the Silk Road passed, and was the one road connecting Central Asia and China, the former called the Western Regions. Just to the south was the Yangguan pass, which was also an important point on the Silk Road.

Dunhuang Yadan National Geopark

Yangguan pass

It is a mountain pass that was fortified by Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty around 120 BC and used as an outpost in the colonial dominions adjacent to ancient China. In a famous poem, “Seeing Yuaner off on a Mission to Anxi”, the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei wrote: Let’s finish another cup of wine, my dear sir, Out west past the Yangguan, old friends there’ll be none.

• Lamb meat soup
  Lamb meat soup is a traditional Dunhuang snack. Use local goats kept in Dunhuang as the main ingredient.
  The oil flour is filled with sugar, sweet-scented osmanthus, rose essence, walnuts, and sesame seeds. It is fried in golden and its appearance is slightly smaller than that of the Beijing fried cakes. The taste is not as sweet as the Northwest style.

Dunhuang is a tourist city, so there are a lot of hotel and youth hostels. In the tourist season, the bed is 45 yuan. The double beds room is between 120 yuan and 180 yuan. In the off-season, the room price can be half-price of high season.
