Guide is a small Tibetan city located south of Xining. Because of its name, you will find it hard to search for information about it in English. It is near the origin of the 3 rivers (Yellow, Yangtze and Mekong).
As of 2016, new highways mean that Guide is an easy 3-hour return day trip from Xining. Book your return ticket when you arrive!
Local life
Guide is a multi-ethnic area. In addition to the Han nationality, there are also Tibetan, Hui, Tu, Salar, Mongolian, Man, Yao, Xibo, Miao, Tujia, Kazakh, Zhuang, Dongxiang and Baoan. Among the ethnic minorities, the most populous are Tibetans, followed by the Huis.

Attractions
Kanbula National Forest Park
Being the first national geo-park in Qinghai, Kanbula National Forest Park is a scenic area with Danxia Landform as the main sight. It is adjacent to the Yellow River in the north and close to the magnificent Lijiaxia Hydropower Station. The red mountains in Kanbula And the green lake in Lijiaxia Reservoir set off perfectly with each other, forming a beautiful natural painting.
Arrival method: Take long distance bus from Xining Long Distance Bus Station to Kanbula (Lijiaxia) Town. It costs around CNY 23.
Guide ancient town
The ancient city of Qide was built in the 13th year of Ming Hongwu (1380). It was renovated in the 18th year of Wanli (1590) and the city walls were basically preserved. The ancient city covers an area of about 35,000 square meters and has a construction area of 3,060 square meters. It has a history of more than 600 years.

Zha Chang hot spring
About 20km outside of town in a small Tibetan Village. The water is very very hot in the summer and locals indicate it’s better in the winter. Be prepared for naked old Tibetan men and women. Address: Zhacangoukou, Hexi Town, Guide County 15 km from the county seat
Arrival method: You can take the shuttle bus in the county town, pass the Hexi Town and Liuyu Village, enter the red Danxia landform in the ravine, drive for about half an hour and then reach the hot spring area.
Danxia landform
The Thousand Buddhas Grand Canyon is now rated as the “National Geopark” by the Ministry of Land and Resources. The Danxia landform is distributed in Quide, with a total area of about 4,000 square kilometers. It is located in the Qianfo Grand Canyon near the village of Ashgun in the town of Qiyun.

Longyangxia Dam
The Longyangxia Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam at the entrance of the Longyangxia canyon on the Yellow River in Gonghe County, Qinghai Province, China. The dam is 178 metres (584 ft) tall and was built for the purposes of hydroelectric power generation The dam supports a 1,280 MW power station with 4 x 320 MW generators that can operate at a maximum capacity of 1400 MW. Controlling ice, the dam controls downstream releases to reservoirs lower in the river, Water to the dam’s 24.7 billion m3 reservoir provides irrigation water for up to 1,000,000 hectares (2,471,054 acres) of land.

Arrival method: The first class of Xining to Gonghe County will start at 8:00 every day, and the last class will start at 18:00. Every half hour, the departure point of each car is different. Take a ride from the bus station in the town of Chabucha to the Longyang Gorge, and take a bus every day. You can also take the bus directly from Xining to Longyangxia, which is only one day.

Turn left out of the Bus Station and there is a hotel with decent doubles for about 100 Yuan (after bargaining) about 50m up the road. This hotel can take foreigners.
Wen Quan Binguan (hot spring hotel) is a more upmarket option with a hot spring heated swimming pool and spa. This is the default location for foreign tourists. Doubles start at about 200 Yuan. Outside of summer you should be able to bargain hard.
