Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou and heart of politics, economics, culture, as well as science and technology in Guizhou province. Located in the east of Yun-Gui (Yunnan-Guizhou) plateau, Guiyang is regarded as a peal in plateau due to its center location in southwest of China.

Guiyang enjoys a humid and mild subtropical climate. The annual temperature on average is 15.3℃, the maximum temperature of the year reaches 35.1℃, and the minimum temperature is -7.3℃.In summer, the average temperature is 23.2℃ and the rainfall is sufficient. To some extent, severe winter never hits the city, with temperature of the coldest month being 4.6℃ on average. The shelterbelt forest of Guiyang city is abundant in negative oxygen ion, thus being called natural oxygen bar and hailed as the capital of summer resort in China.

Since the air is pure, haze-free, and fresh, and sandstorms never hit the city, people in Guiyang feel extremely proud of their mild weather, which can be illustrated in the saying, “while there is Paradise above and Suzhou and Hangzhou below, Guiyang weather is the most agreeable.” So for travelers, they can visit the city at any time of the year, but the best time may be March and April when many a Miao ethnic minority festival is observed.

Qianling Hill Park

It is a uniquely large park in the city proper and a 4A National Tourist Attraction. The name was derived from the Qianling Mountain that lies in the park, which is the most famous mountain in southern Guizhou. Qingyan Ancient Town

Qingyan becomes famous for it retains the buildings of the Ming and Qing dynasties. As well as the old buildings and delightful scenery, you will find some minority ethnic villages of the Miao people, Dong people and Buyi people. Jiaxiu Tower

Based on a huge stone in Nanming River in the south of Guiyang City, Jiaxiu Building was originally built in 1597 in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Firstly destroyed in 1621, and rebuilt later and renamed as Laifeng Pavilion, the Jiaxiu Building was destroyed. Again afterwards but regained its previous name when it was rebuilt another time in 1689 in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Having been repaired for six times, the existing Jiaxiu Building was built in 1909. As witness of Guiyang history as well as the symbol Of the Guiyang culture, it was inscribed as a national key protected site in 2006.

Yangming Cave

Guiyang Forest Park

Guiyang Forest Park, which used to be the experimental forest of Guizhou Forest Science Academy, is currently the oldest and largest municipal forest park in the nation. Nanjiang Grand Canyon

Nanjiang Grand Canyon is located in Kaiyang County, about 54 kilometers (34 miles) from Guiyang City. Visitors can view the special karst landscape and encounter over 80 natural landscapes and 40 waterfalls there. The valley stretches for over 40 kilometers (25 miles) with a deepest point of 398 meters (1,306 feet). 122 kinds of birds and 36 kinds of animals live harmoniously in the old-growth forests and on the clear cliffs. Taking a kayak to drift down the rapid river is a must-do activity here .

Hongfeng Lake

Flower Stream Park

Huaxi (Flower Stream) Park is the centerpiece of Huaxi Scenic Spot, which is hailed as “a pearl inlaid in plateau”. Blessed with green mountains, limpid water, ample foliage, Flower Stream Park is great place for excursion. Early in Qing Dynasty , a local governmental official began to construct pavilions and cultivated flowers and trees over there. Flower Stream, the “First Love River of China” winds through the park and clearly reflects the beautiful surroundings. Chenyi, a marshal of Chinese Community Party, was once Inspired to write an excellent verse to highly praise the beauty of Huaxi Park: Fine mountains and water are everywhere here; the layout of Huaxi is even more natural. Food

Siwawa

It is one of the most common snacks on the streets. At first sight it looks like a baby in swaddling clothes. The “swaddling clothes” are thin pancakes made of rice floor. After rolling radish strips, Houttuynia cordata, sea-tangle strips, chilli paste, and fried soybeans can you try it immediately! Of course, locals often add spicy and sour juice to it.

Spicy Chicken

It is so special that you can by no means miss it whenever you are in Guiyang. Salt the chicken with spices before stir-frying. Then drop a great deal of chilli which looks like glutinous rice cake and place the chicken back to the pot at the same time. In effect, people can try this dish in the fashion of hotpot.

Changwang Noodle

It is a notable local flavour snack, whose main ingredients are pork large intestine, noodle, egg, mung bean sprouts and fried pork. It not only looks like a ruby and tastes spicy, leaving an unforgettable flavour to you.

Huaxi Beef Rice Noodle

The snack is so widely known that people treat it as breakfast, lunch, supper and snack food. The beef is thoroughly cooked, the rice noodle is smooth, and more important, the soup is spicy and fresh. Sometimes, you have to queue up to enjoy the dish!

Accommodation in Guiyang is extremely convenient, especially around the city center with hotels and guesthouses of different sizes. For self-help backpackers, there are no YHA International Youth Hostels in Guiyang and even Guizhou, but inns with similar charges and business models are available.

Shopping

Guiyang’s specialties are mainly handicrafts with local characteristics, such as batik, cloth, gongs, puppets, wooden combs and so on. At the Ruijin North intersection in Guiyang, you can go to Qiancui to find these local specialty products of Guizhou.
