Travel information

• The temperature difference between day and night in Hancheng is large. In autumn and winter, you need to prepare two more pieces of clothing. During the day, the sunshine is stronger. It is better to have high-degree sunscreen skin care products to avoid sunburn when exposed to the outside.

Destination sketch

Located in the northeast of Weinan City, Hancheng is about 230 kilometers (143 miles) away from the capital city Xian. It is the hometown of the world cultural celebrity Sima Qian as well as many other historical celebrities such as Zhao Wu, the Ministerial Scholar-Bureaucrat of the Jin State in the Spring and Autumn Periods (770 BC-476 BC), Wang Jie, the Prime Minister of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and Du Pengcheng, a noted writer of modern day China. It is thus known as the ‘Land of Literature and History’. It is filled with cultural and historical relics, of which Sima Qian Temple, Dang Village and the Confucius Temple are the most attractive scenic spots. Moreover, the folk Shehuo (a kind of folk performing arts) here should not be missed.

Bus

The 101 and 102 buses in Hancheng District are go around between new and old Town, and the fare is 1 yuan. During the holiday period, the Dayu Temple to the Sima Qian’s tomb will open new bus line to the entrance of the scenic area.

Taxis

The taxi fee between the New and Old Town is at a starting price of RMB 5, and it costs RMB 10 to and from the two cities. It is necessary to negotiate a good price with the driver in advance.

Hancheng Confucius Temple

Hancheng Confucius Temple in Dongxue Lane is the third largest shrine typically built for offering sacrifices to Confucius, a great thinker and educator in ancient China. He was respected by monarchs of many dynasties since Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 24 AD) .
Confucius Temple is a set of architecture groups of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) that are preserved only. Currently, it has 22 main and complementary buildings, altogether 78 rooms, and is the largest and best preserved ancient architecture in western China.

Hancheng Ancient City

The ancient city of Hancheng, which has a history of more than 1,300 years, is one of the six ancient cities that have been well preserved in the country. Sima Qian Temple

Sima Qian (145 – 90 BC), the famous historian and litterateur of China, is a native of Hancheng. He began to read ancient Chinese books and biographies when he was ten years old, including the works of Dong Zhongshu and Kong Anguo (the Great litterateurs of China). At the age of 20, he started to travel across China to learn the various customs and collect Chinese legends. Several years later, he inherited from his father the position of Grand Scribes (Taishi Ling) to the Emperor and Thus became in charge of astronomy, calendars and imperial books. Hereafter, he took on an ambitious project – writing Shi Ji (Records of the Grand Historian). He was sentenced to castration after defending Li Ling who surrendered to Hun. In spite of this Cruel punishment, he finished Shi Ji, which is an unprecedented masterpiece.

Dang Village

The village is mainly composed of people with surnames Dang and Jia, about 320 families and over 1,400 persons. It is named Dang Village because people of surname Dang lived here earlier. It was built in 1331 and reached its prosperity period in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). Professor Charles of the Institute of Architects in Britain once said ‘The oriental architectural culture lies in China, while Chinese traditional residential architectural culture lies in Hancheng.’ Japanese Doctor Qingmu Zhengfu also praised Dang Village as the living fossil Of the oriental people’s traditional ancient village. Among the architectures, the Siheyuan (Courtyards) ranks first in popularity.

Puzhao Temple

Yellow River Dragon Gate

There is a motor boat on the shore under the bridge, and you can watch this section of the Yellow River more closely. The ship started from the bridge and went north all the time, looking up to see the cliffs on the shore. Accommodation

The hotels in the new urban area of Hancheng City are comfortable and convenient in transportation. Most of them are newly-built standard hotels and do not have many features. The standard room is between 100 and 150 yuan. There are many antique hotels in the old city to choose from, but most of the hotel facilities are not complete, the inn is simple, standard room is about 80 yuan.

Shopping

Hancheng has specialty products such as Hancheng Dahongpao Pepper, Hancheng native specialty thin-leaved walnuts, Hancheng stone dumplings. The main product of Chengcheng County is Golden fruits and Guojiazhuang cherries. Pucheng County is home to Pucheng Pear, Shantou Steamed Rice, and Babao Spicy.
