Hanzhong is located at the nowadays headwater of the Han River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze River. However some modern historians suggested that the nearby Xihan River, a major tributary of the neighbouring Jialing River to the west, historically drained into the Han River instead, and was later rerouted by a large earthquake at the Wudu Commandery in 186 BC, possible due to landslide damming. This might explain the city’s name, since its location was historically once the middle point of the ancient Han River.

Best Travel season

Situated in the transition area between warm temperate zone and subtropical zone, the area has moderate and humid weather without torrid a summer. The winter wind current coming form North China is blocked by the Qinling Mountains, so winter is relatively warmer. The rainy season of Hanzhong weather usually appears during June and lasts until September. Any season is a good season to visit the city.

Cai Lun Paper Culture Museum

Cai Lun paper culture museum is located in the Yangxian County Dragon Town, and papermaking inventor Cai Lun fiefs and Cemetery Mausoleum only wall — Cai Lun.

Hanzhong Museum (Ancient Hantai)

Located in the city center, Ancient Hantai was originally the royal residence of Liu Bang – the first emperor of the Han Dynasty. Currently, it is the site of the Hanzhong Museum, housing about 12,000 cultural relics. The Thirteen Moya Carvings of Stone Gate and The Baoxie Plank Road are the most famous exhibitions in the museum.

Hanzhong Wuhou Temple

Wuhou Temple Located in the west of Mianxian County, about 45 km (28 miles) from downtown area, the Wuhou Temple (Temple of Marquis Wu) was built in 236 to memoraliize Zhuge Liang – the most intelligent and successful strategist of the Three Kingdoms Period ( 220 – 280). It is said to be the first of its kind in the entire country, even 50 years earlier than the Wu Hou Shrine in Chengdu

Arrival method: Take the No. 3 bus from the county to the area. There are a lot of shuttles from Hanzhong to Mian county, about 10 minutes a day, via Baocheng, you can see the boardwalk at Hedong and get on the bus from Hedong. You can also take a shuttle bus from Hanzhong to Lueyang or Lianghekou and get off directly at Wuhou Temple. From Lueyang, take the bus to Hanzhong and get off at Wuhou Temple.

Wuhou Tomb

In the tomb area there are 22 ancient Han Pak with more than 1,700 years of history. The tombs are covered with buckets, and are typical Han tomb forms. The sealed earth is about 5 meters high. The perimeter is 60 meters long and there are brick-shaped eight-shaped low walls around them.

Tomb of Zhang Qian

Located in Raojiaying Village, Chenggu County, the tomb is the final resting place of Zhang Qian (164-114 BC) – an outstanding diplomat and explorer during the Western Han Dynasty (202BC-9 AD), and the pioneer of the world-famous Silk Road. The tomb is 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of central downtown.

Shaanxi Foping National Nature Reserve

About 158 kilometers (100 miles ) northeast of the city, Foping National Nature Reserve is also the home to cute pandas and other rare animals and plants. In addition to the black-white pandas we see, the brown giant panda was also once found here. Because of the complex ecosystem which has cultivated various kinds of animals and plants, this reserve is described as the “Natural Animal and Plant Gene Base.”

Qingmuchuan Ancient Town

About 200 km (124 mi) from city center, Qingmuchan Ancient Town used to be a vital trading and military post in ancient China and now has become a famous attraction site for its well-preserved traditional blocks, old buildings, temples and ancestral halls. Huilongchang Old Street, Qingmuchuan Furen Middle School, and Weifutang’s Residence are the must-see sites here.

Arrival method: Hanzhong Bus Terminal has a direct bus to Qingmuchuan with relatively few trips. Travelers from other places can take a car to Ningqiang and then transfer to a car to Qingmuchuan; they can also take a train to get off at Yangpingguan and then transfer to another train.

Shimen Plank Road Scenic Area

Shimen Plank Road Scenic Area is a famous attraction in the northeast suburb of the city. It is famous for Shimen Plank Road, Shimen Tunnel which was the first man-made tunnel in the world, and for Shimen Dam from where you can enjoy the gripping Panorama of Baohe River and the riverside natural sceneries.

Arrival method: Bus No. 21 or No. 102 to get off at Hedong shop, from Hedong shop to the Luohe plank road there is less than 2 kilometers, is built on the cliff on the earth road, taxi 10 yuan. The time is not too tight but you can also go hiking. The scenery along the way is good. Hedong shop is the only way to go to Lixian, Lueyang, Liuba Zhangliang Temple. You can take the opportunity to get off the Shimen Reservoir Scenic Area on the way.

Crested Ibis Nature Reserve

Located in northern Yangxian County, this national nature reserve was established to protect a rare bird, crested ibis from extinction. The reserve has the only rescue and care center for the crested ibis in China. The number of birds has increased from the initial seven ones In the wild to five hundred.

Food

Hanzhong is famous throughout China for its “Liang Pi,” cold rice noodles served with a spicy and sour sauce and usually served with vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots or sprouts.
There is a hot version of Liang Pi, which although not as good is also readily available.
Worth trying are “Rou Jia Muo” which are essentially Chinese hamburgers and “Niu Rou Mian,” wheat noodles with beef. Both items are readily available from street vendors.
Culinarily, Hanzhong is part of Sichuan and sa such the food in the city is generally spicy.

Convenient accommodation in Hanzhong City, from the railway station along Renmin Road to North Avenue, the central square is the most prosperous area of Hanzhong, there are many hotels and restaurants and guest houses.
