Honghe Prefecture – literally translates into the “Red River” prefecture. The prefecture does, in fact, straddle the river and while the north of Honghe is generally warm and arid, the south is generally tropical and green. No matter where you are within the prefecture, however, you can rely on some fantastic mountains ranges or hilly terrain.
In Honghe, there are 10 indigenous peoples including Hani, Yi, Miao, Yi, Zhuang, Yao, Hui, Buyi, Lahu, and Brown. Among them, the Hani population accounts for the largest proportion.
Hani Nationalit, The Hani people mainly inhabit an area within the reaches of the Yuan and Lantsang Rivers. This is a branch of the ancient Qiang people who had been nomadic on the Tibetan Plateau and then emigrated southward. The Hani ethnic group now has a population of 1,424,990. They are convinced that everything has soul, so they worship many gods and their ancestors. In the 1920s, Christianity and Buddhism had spread to them, but with little influence. The person who is designated to hold the religious activities is hereditary and doctors cure patients with witchcraft and herbal medicine.
More than 3000 tourists and local residents attended the “long street banquet,” a time-honored culinary tradition prevailing among several ethnic groups. The town was an important commercial center in ancient China.
The time starts from the first day of the Lunar Calendar in October and ends on the Monkey Day. It lasts for 13 days. It is the longest and most abundant festival in the Hani period, similar to the Spring Festival of the Han nationality. During the holiday season, each household killed pigs and killed chickens, glutinous rice dumplings, and so on, worshiping ancestors.
The first Monkey day of March in lunnar calender each year is Girls Festival for Hani Minority. It is a day for Yiche young boys and girls to fall in love.
Most of local people can not speak English.
Enjoying a subtropical plateau monsoon climate, Honghe has an annual average temperature of 15℃-22℃ (59℉-71.6℉). With no summer heat or winter chilliness, the prefecture is abundant in sunlight and rainfall. The southern region is wetter and warmer than the northern one. The temperature varies greatly between day and night, but slightly during the whole year. When to Go: March to April and September to November are fine periods to visit the prefecture.
The average accommodation provided in each village is generally no more than 200 yuan, only a small number of attractions charge tickets, average daily consumption is about 200 yuan.
