Huaihua is in western Hunan, southwestern China. It is a prefecture-level city in a mountainous area with some rural poverty problems. The city itself has a population around 400,000, the prefecture as a whole 5 million.

Beliefs and taboos

The prefecture encompasses several autonomous ethnic counties, towns and villages. Major ethnic groups found here are the Dong or Kam, Miao or Hmong, Tujia, and Yao. It was long inhabited by these ethnic group before the arrival of the Han Chinese more then a thousand years ago. They are known to be indigenous to these mountainous areas. They also inhabit neighboring Guizhou province.

Jingzhou Miao songs

Flying Tiger Memorial Hall

The First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941–1942, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC), recruited under presidential authority and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. The shark-faced nose art of the Flying Tigers remains among the most recognizable image of any individual combat aircraft or combat unit of World War II.
