Jiayuguan is the symbolic Western end of the Great Wall and so one of the defining points on the Northern Silk Road. This was where the power of Han China dissolved into what the Chinese believed were the barbarian lands to the West. To be cast out of the magnificent fort here into the unknown was considered a fate worse than death for corrupt officials and other criminals who would be leaving Chinese civilisation behind forever. This prosperous city also has a restored section of the Great Wall as well as some tombs to visit making it a worthwhile stop.

Local life

The ethnic group living in the Hexi Corridor today is dominated by the Han nationality. It also includes ethnic minorities such as Yugu, Tibetan, Kazak, Hui, and Manchu.

Beliefs and taboos

In Chinese, ‘Yugur’ means ‘wealth and solidity’. With a population of 13,719 as at the 2000 census, approximately 90 percent of the total population live in the four areas of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, and the rest in the Yugur village of Huangnibao area in Jiuquan city (a city in western Gansu Province). The minority has a long history that can be traced back to the year 3 B.C. They live in the mountainous areas, mainly by stock raising, and are typical nomads.
They believe in Lamaism (the Yellow Religion). Other forms of spirit worship are also cherished by them, such as an original belief called the God Khan.

Culture

Silk Road

The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. It was central to cultural interaction between them for centuries.[1][2][3] The Silk Road referred to both the terrestrial and the Asia with the Middle East and southern Europe.

Heishan Rock Painting

The rock paintings began in primitive colored pottery. The Heishan Rock Paintings in the Jiayuguan area are an early rock painting with more than 150 pieces. The contents cover animals, hunting activities, dances, architecture, ancient characters, etc.

Qinqiang Drama

Qinqiang Drama is popular in this place. When traveling there, you should not miss the performance of Qinqiang Drama.

Jiayu Pass

A rather modern and rebuilt part of the last fortress at the Great Wall towards the west. Includes the generic camel rides and archery stores to distract from a rather meager attraction. Wei-Jin Art Gallery

Located about 15 kilometers northeast of Jiayuguan, Wei-Jin Art Gallery is a big tomb group with over 1,400 tombs built between the 3rd Century and 5th Century during the Wei and Jin dynasties.
Renowned as the largest subterranean art gallery in the world, housing a great deal of colorful murals, Wei-Jin Art Gallery has amplified tourists from both home and abroad since 1972 when it was excavated. Most tombs are of families, housing bodies of three or Four generations, and now only Grave 6 and Grave 7 are open for tourism.

Great Wall Hiking
