Situated in the northwest of Gansu Province, Jiuquan neighbors Zhangye in the east within the province. It is also bordered by Qinghai Province in the south, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west and Inner Mongolia and Mongolia in the north.
Since extremely long ago, this area had been inhabited by nomads of several ancient ethnic minorities in northwestern China. It was until the early ages of the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD) that vast land west of the Yellow River including Jiuquan was entirely put into the regnal territory. The famous Silk Road stretched through the city and it had been the vital pass linking Central China with Central Asia and Europe.
The ethnic group living in the Hexi Corridor today is dominated by the Han nationality, with the Yugur, Tibetan, Kazak, Hui, and Manchu minorities.
In Chinese, ‘Yugur’ means ‘wealth and solidity’. With a population of 13,719 as at the 2000 census, approximately 90 percent of the total population live in the four areas of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, and the rest in the Yugur village of Huangnibao area in Jiuquan city (a city in western Gansu Province). The minority has a long history that can be traced back to the year 3 B.C. They live in the mountainous areas, mainly by stock raising, and are typical nomads.
They believe in Lamaism (the Yellow Religion). Other forms of spirit worship are also cherished by them, such as an original belief called the God Khan.
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. It was central to cultural interaction between them for centuries. The Silk Road refers to both the terrestrial and the maritime routes connecting Asia with the Middle East and southern Europe.
The Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in silk carried out along its length, beginning in the Han dynasty (207 BCE–220 CE). The Han dynasty expanded the Central Asian section of the trade routes around 114 BCE through the missions and explorations of the Chinese imperial envoy Zhang Qian. The Chinese took great interest in the safety of their trade products and extended the Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route.
May to October is the best season to visit.
Due to the restriction of natural conditions in the northwest, transportation expenses are a big expense. The average daily consumption is between 200 yuan and 300 yuan.
