Known as “the emerald on the earth’s belt”, Libo is located in the south of Fujian Province and has extremely rich tourism resources. Nearly 1/4 of the area is scenic. Libo’s South China karst landforms have been successfully listed in the World Natural Heritage List and become China’s sixth world natural heritage.

Local life

Libo in the southern part of Guizhou province is an ethnic minority mountain region of Shui, Yao, Miao, Han, Yao and Buyi, who jointly created a colorful and diverse ethnic culture. It will be a great fun to visit the different ethnic groups.

Belief and Taboo

Bouyei (Buyi) Nationality

They believe in many gods. There is a God for each Mountain; River, Lake or Pond; for each old and unusual tree, for megalith, caves, paddy field, and for when it rains or thunders, there are various gods. They also worship ancestors’ supreme might with each family setting niches in their home, holding activities during the Spring, Pure Brightness, and the Zhongyuan Festivals.
Besides that, as many families are of the same origin, they often worship again together, sacrificing and praying for peace and happiness.

Yao Nationality

People living in different regions have differing beliefs. Some of them worship nature, some idolize their ancestors, and some adore the totem. Taoism (one of the accepted Chinese religions) also plays an important role in their lives, which includes the following of sacrificial ceremonies. Some people believe in wizardry.

Local culture

Bouyei batik

The Bouyei batik has enjoyed great fame for thousands of years. Firstly, painting various patterns upon white cloth with molten wax, then dyeing with indigo liquor and herbal medicine, and finally dewax the cloth. A finished piece of batik cloth is dainty with brilliant lines. The common patterns are pear flowers, fleuret, waves, eddies, chains, and so on.

Embroidery

Embroidery are the Bouyei people’s fortes. Deft people design their craftworks with splendid patterns and named them as ‘lamb brocade’, ‘fish brocade’ and ‘butterfly brocade’.

Most of local people can not speak English.

The best travel season to Libo is from April to August.

You can eat an authentic meal at the price of 35 to 50 yuan in Libo. There are two kinds of accommodations, including hotels and guest house. Prices range from tens to hundreds of yuan. Consumption is mainly for transportation and tickets for some scenic spots, the daily average is about 500 yuan. If you are hiking , the cost will be less, and the average daily consumption is around 300 yuan.

Traffic in the city

There are public transportation in Libo County, which basically leads to the suburban villages, and the fare is 1 yuan. In small towns, the best way to get around is by taxi. The county town is not big.

Zhangjiang Scenic Area

Located in Libo County, Qiannan City of Guizhou Province, Libo Zhangjiang Scenic Area is characterized by unique Karst landscapes, mysterious dense forests, various living species, splendid overlapping mountains, and clear rivers and lakes. Because of the well-preserved ecological environment, the area is honoured by both Chinese and overseas experts, as “an unparalleled, well-preserved green gem unmatched by any other Karst sites in the world”. As a famous tourist attraction, there are altogether three main scenic areas to visit: Xiaoqikong, Daqikong, and Shuichun River.

Xiaoqikong

Honoured as “Small Jiuzhaigou”, Xiaoqikong Scenic Area is best known for the seven-arched Xiaoqikong Bridge, which is a landmark of Libo Zhangjiang Scenic Area. It was built in 1835 on a vital traffic road in ancient times between Qiannan City and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. With a length of 44 yards (40 meters), a width of 2.4 yards (2.2 meters), and a height of 6.0 yards (5.5 meters), the bridge shows delicate structures and exquisite craftsmanship.

Due to continuous erosion, Xiaoqikong Scenic Area has evolved into the deep V-shaped Xiangshui River Valley, which is home to plunging waterfalls. In the upper reaches of Xiangshui River, Laya Waterfall seems to link with the sky at the top surrounded by clouds. Near Laya Waterfall, a 68-step waterfall flows down at random along a winding river less than 1 mile (2 kilometers). Downstream of Xiangshui River, the Green Valley Waterfall is surrounded by high green mountains which colour its water with green.

To the west of Xiangshui River Valley, Mandarin Ducks River, Heaven Bell Cave, as well as Wolong Valley are nestled. Mandarin Ducks River, as a typical Karst Blind Valley river, is about 50 acres (0.2 square kilometers). It takes one hour to visit by boat. Heaven Bell Cave is a Karst cave enjoying landscapes such as stalagmites and stone curtains. Decorated by colourful lights, it is like a fairyland. Wolong Valley is a rafting resort. The rafting begins from Wolong Pool and ends upstream of the Mandarin Ducks River taking a total time of 1.5 hours.

In addition, Water Forest and Rock Forest are great Karst forest wonders of Libo zhangjiang Scenic Area. Water Forest stands in Xiangshui Riverbeds. Although submerged by rushing water, they grow well. About 100 yards (91 meters) east of Water Forest, Rock Forest displays an abundance of monstera deliciosa. Roots of these plants extend most wondrously along fissures in the rocks.

Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation

In the southeast of Libo County lies the state-level Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation. It is a rarity of primeval subtropical forest in Karst topography in China, where numerous plants and animals live. Waterfalls, lakes, karst caves and hills of this conservation enhance its beauty.

The characteristic of the traditional Karst topography is stone desertification. Though it created some famous attractions, such as Yunnan Stone Forest and Huangguoshu Waterfall, it is still very hard for the poor soil covering on the stones to provide an adequate breeding ground for the vegetation.

However, in the southern suburb of Libo County, Guizhou Province, an attraction called Maolan Karst Forest Natural Conservation is so different, since the forest coverage rate reaches 91.59 percent. And at present, it’s a very rare primeval subtropical forest of Karst topography in China, even in the world. Therefore, some scientists are interested in this place and also many tourists would like to explore this natural Karst forest.

Classic ecological crossing tour

From the ancient bridge or the Wuyan Bridge, you can walk through the Wangpai Mountain. This is one of the most classic hiking routes in the Maolan Nature Reserve. The entire route contains the most famous sights and typical geological features of Maolan. Due to the difficulty of the route, there are high requirements for the physical strength, equipment and comprehensive ability of the visitors. It takes one day to complete the crossing. Please arrange the time reasonably and adequately, and do not stay in the mountains at night.

Original ecological mountain line

This route is dominated by the original karst landscape, including all the scenic spots in the scenic area. Visitors can choose to visit the whole route from 1 to 2 days, and the accommodation can be set at the Wuyan Bridge.

Karst World Natural Heritage Route

There are hundreds of large and small hotels in Libo County. The prices range from tens to hundreds. In addition to hotels and hotels, there are many guesthouse in Libo County and scenic spots. Most of them are beautiful and clean. The accommodation in the scenic spot is mainly distributed in Wangmeng Town near Maolan, Meiyuan, Banzhai and Xiaoqikong Scenic Area.
