Luoyang is on the northern side of the Luo River. The train station is north of the town centre, and Jinguyuan Lu goes from the station to Wangcheng Square. To the east is the Old Town and to the west the Wangcheng Park. Tourists come here primarily to see the Longmen Caves, the White Horse Temple and Guanlin Temple, which are close to the town, rather than the town itself. It was the capital of several dynasties in Chinese history, most notably the Eastern Han Dynasty, and the state of Wei during the Three Kingdoms period.

Luoyang has a well-developed bus system and buses to all major attractions are accessible. You can take bus No. 56 and 58 to reach the White Horse Temple. You can take bus No.53 and No.81 to the Longmen Grottoes. You can take Bus Nos.15, 39, 55, 58 and 69 to the vicinity of Guanlin Temple. China National Flower Garden

China National Flower Garden was built in 2001 along the southern bank of Luo River of Luoyang in Henan Province. With an area of 255 acres, it is the largest peony park in China. Luoyang Museum

Luoyang Museum located in downtown area, is a reflection of the rich history of Luoyang city. As a major Chinese cultural center, the city was the capital of more than a dozen ancient dynasties, such as the Xia (2100 -1600 BC), the East Zhou (770 – 256 BC). It experienced prosperous growth, making it one of the most affluent cities of the Tang Dynasty. Lijing Gate

Longmen Grottoes

The Longmen Grottoes, aka Longmen Caves, are between Mount Xiang and Mount Longmen and face Yi River. Longmen Grottoes, Yungang Caves and Mogao Caves are regarded as the three most famous treasure houses of stone inscriptions in China.

Who built the Longmen Grottoes? Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei Dynasty firstly directed the construstion around the year 493 when he moved the capital to Luoyang. After that, the Longmen Caves were continuously built during the 400 years until the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The scenery area holds over 2,300 holes and niches, 2,800 steles, 40 dagobas, 1,300 caves and 100,000 statues. Most of them are the works of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the flourishing age of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Lots of historical materials concerning art, music, religion, calligraphy, medicine, costume and architecture are kept here.

White Cloud Mountain

The White Cloud Mountain (Baiyunshan) National Forest Park was established in September, 1992. Located in southern Song County, Luoyang, the hinterland of the Funiu Mountain Ridge, it occupies a total area of 168 sq kilometers (64.9 sq miles). It invites visitors to refresh themselves in its natural beauty.

White Horse Temple

When was the White Horse Temple Built: in the Year 68AD in Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220)
White Horse Temple, boasting great antique architecture, has remained intact for over 1,900 years.
Who built the White Horse Temple in China? It was commanded by Han Emperor Ming. In the year 64 of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the emperor sent a delegation of his men to study Buddhism in the western world. After three years, two eminent Indian monks, She Moteng and Zhu Falan, came back with the delegation. They brought with them a white horse carrying Buddhist sutras and Buddhist figures on its back. This was the first time that Buddhism appeared in China.

Guanlin Temple

Commemorating Guan Yu, great warrior of the Kingdom of Shu and main character from, “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. The temple is built over the mausoleum which houses the general god’s head, and contains several halls dedicated to the deified man. The side halls are all under construction.

Song Mountain

Song Mountain lies in Dengfeng city, in the heart of Henan Province and about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of its capital, Zhengzhou. Song Mountain, which is also known as Zhong Yue (middle mountain), is known as one of the Five Mountains of China. The others in this group are Tai mountain in Shandong Province, Hua Mountain in Shaanxi Province, Mount Heng in Shanxi Province and Mount Heng in Hunan Province.

The mountain has fine natural scenery. Its 72 mountains, grouped around the peaks of Mount Shaoshi and Mount Taishi, extend for about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from east to west. Besides these mountains, there are many valleys, caves, pools and waterfalls, each of which provides the visitor with a unique and wonderful experience. The landscape is so unique that it has been given the title of ‘International Geological Park’ by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Yellow River Xiaolangdi Scenic Area

Lying in Mengjin County 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) north of Luoyang City, Henan Province, Xiaolangdi Scenic Area is located in the exit of the last gorge in the middle reaches of Yellow River.

The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project has become a dominating feature of this stretch of the mighty river and the three gorges to be found here are a major attraction.

Food

Dining is quite an enjoyable experience in Luoyang. The famous local Water Feast comprises of a series of soup dishes and is a great feast for eyes and taste buds. The time-honored Yan Cai, offers delicate and delicious imperial dishes such as the Yellow River Carp. Zhenbutong, an old and famous restaurant, is highly recommended. The various local snacks, including the Bufan Soup, Pepper Soup, mutton soup, and beef soup are all worth trying.

Accommodation

Luoyang is more developed in Xigong District and Longxi District, as well as the old city. It is recommended to live in Xigong District with convenient transportation and closer distances from various scenic spots. During the Peony Flower Festival, Luoyang Hotel prices are very expensive, three-star hotels are generally more than 400 yuan.

Shopping

Local specialties such as ancient-style Palace Lanterns, bronze vessels and tri-colored glazed potteries will no doubt delight your eyes and offer you ideal souvenirs. Most souvenirs can be purchased at the old block of Lijing Gate Area. Today Shopping Mall (Xin Du Hui) is a place you can buy modern items and entertain yourselves.
