It is the second largest prefecture-level city of Sichuan province in Southwest China. In 2006, Mianyang was ranked as China’s third “most suitable city for living” by China Daily, after coastal cities Dalian and Xiamen, but it has since dropped out of the top 10.
Mianyang, called Fuxian (Fu County) in ancient times, had advanced in agriculture during the Qin (221−206 BCE) and Han (206 BCE−220 CE) dynasties. It has a history of over 2,200 years since the Emperor Gaozu of Han established the first county in this area in 201 BCE. Due to its advantageous location, it had always been a town of great military importance and formed a natural defence for Chengdu.
Qiang ethnic group lives mainly in the counties of the Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan; Maowen Qiang Autonomous County is the largest area that is home to the Qiang people. They have a profound history of over 3,000 years as evidenced by inscriptions on oracle bones. According to the 2000 census, they have a population of 306,072.
They believe that everything in nature has a spirit. They especially consider white quartz stone as the symbol of rightness having the power of gods, while the black quartz represents evil. Every third day of a New Year, the Qiang go to white stones on their roofs to worship gods, such as the god of the mountain, the god of the stone king, the god of the ox king, etc. In the Qiang daily life, there are several taboos that all their people should observe and that others should respect: if there is a patient in a family, the family hangs a red ribbon on the door to indicate that guests are not welcome; it is forbidden to walk over a burner, to sit on the threshold and stairs; and to put chopsticks across the bowl which Han people often do.
Shu Embroidery, also known as “Chuan Embroidery,” has been famous since the Three Kingdoms period and is mainly produced in Chengdu, Mianyang and other places. Shu Embroidery is the same as Suzhou Embroidery, Xiang Embroidery, and Guangdong Embroidery, and it is one of the four famous embroidery in China.

The rest consisted of dilapidated buildings. Landslides during the earthquake resulted in death and injuries to many people.
