Nyingchi is one of the important cradles of ancient Tibetan civilization having been settled as early as four or five thousand years ago. It was under domination of the Tupo Kingdom for two hundred years (7th century to the 9th century). Since its liberation in 1951, it has moved away from its long past as a feudal society.
The Nyingchi region is ethnically diverse, and its main part is Tibetan. The population accounts for more than 90% of the total area. In addition, the Menba, Lhoba, Sui and Nu people live in the same generation. Each has its own customs and customs. Even the time and name of the Chinese New Year is different.
Most of local people can not speak English.
The Linzhi area has a slightly higher price than other parts of Tibet because of transportation costs.
Due to the high Indian Ocean winds, the area enjoys temperate semi-humid weather. This climate promotes the growth of lush, green forested areas. Milder weather prevails most of the year but the winters are cold with average temperatures of 32F. October through April is probably the ideal period to visit although winter months can be cold. May though September the weather is warmer; however, this is also the region’s rainy season.

Arrival method: Milin Airport is 52 kilometers away from Bayi Town and has a special airport road. There is an airport bus to and from the airport and the Civil Aviation Bureau opposite the Youth Apartment in Bayi New Town. You can also take the shuttle bus from Bayi Town to Milin County or the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, which can be used at the airport. The fare is 25 yuan and takes about 80 minutes.

Many inns and local residents in the Grand Canyon Scenic Area provide pick-up and car rental services, ask the innkeeper to do it, or carpool. General transfer bus 400-450 yuan. In the Grand Canyon, for example, from the transfer station to the village of Lin, Jiala, carpool 50 yuan a person, chartered 300 yuan a car.

Basum Tso Lake (Basum Lake), also called Cuogao Lake in Tibetan, meaning the green water is the largest lake in eastern Tibet, located in Gongbo’gyamda County. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and natural forest, Basum located far from city still be known from outsides by its primitive beauty and tranquility. Covering 26 square kilometers, the dark blue lake surface like a mirror clearly reflects the tall mountains and green plants in the lakeshore. Midui Glacier is located in Midui Village, Yupu Township, Bome County, Nyingchi Prefecture of Tibet. It is one of three most important marine glaciers in China. In the year 2005, Midui Glacier, known for its diverse forms and magnificent shapes of glaciers, was voted as one of “Six Most Beautiful Glaciers in China”. It is also the lowest-altitude glacier in China with an altitude of only 2400 meters. Standing at the foot of the glacier, you can see clearly the body and face of the main peak (6800m) of Midui Glacier which is one of the highest snow mountains in Tibet. The altitude of the snow line is only about 4600m, which means the main peak is completely a snow mountain, subtracting the invisible subgrade of Qinghai Tibet Plateau. The bright sunlight shines on the snow and glacier, and reflects fascinating twinkles. At the foot of Midui Glacier, there are fertile farm fields, wild forests, and tranquil lakes, as well as friendly and hospitable Tibetan people.
Namjagbarwa is the 15th highest peak in the world having an altitude of 7782 merters above the sea level. It stands the interior of the bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. In face of Indian Ocean, the peak reflects an obvious vertical landform. Tropical rain forest in its valley and above the snow line, it is a snow world.
The sky-scraping Namjagbarwa Peak, with its majestic appearance, precipitous shape and unpredictable climate, has been an ambitious aim of mountain-climbing organizations from various countries.
From the foot of Namjagbarwa, upwards to the 7,782 meters summit, is the following sequence of ecological systems: tropical low mountain evergreen or semi-evergreen monsoon rain forests; sub-tropical mountain evergreen and semi-evergreen broadleaf forests; warm temperate mid-mountain evergreen conifer forests; sub-frigid alpine bushes and grassy marshland; and sub-frigid alpine ice source and frigid ultra-alpine ice and snow.
Yarlungzangbo Canyon is considered as the most mysterious place in the “roof” above the Qinghai-Tiber Plateteau. “water flowing down from the highest peak” is an ancient Tibetan language for Yanglungzhangbo River.
The Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon originates from Mount Kailash and running east for about 1700 km drains a northern section of the Himalayas. It is in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and around the highest peak of east Himalayas-Namjiagbarwa peak (7,787 meters above sea level), forming a huge horseshoe-shaped turn. It’s an unusual canyon and the biggest moisture channel of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Tibet. It is the longest valley with it length of 496 kilo meters. The valley is home to varieties of species, due to its wide range of sea levels.
About 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away from the Bayi Town of Nyingchi City, Benri Mountain, aka Biri Mountain, is a sacred mountain of the Bon Sect, a primitive religion that was prevalent in Tibet before the arrival of Buddhism. According to legend, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche, the founder of the Bon Sect, once practised Bon doctrines on the mountain. Therefore, it holds a dominant position in Tibet.
With an altitude of about 4,572 meters (15,000 feet), the lofty mountain soars into the sky. Luxuriant trees and blooming flowers, in different seasons, constitute marvelous scenery. When spring comes, everything is injected with vitality. In summer, rhododendrons spread everywhere and flutter in the gentle breeze. The golden autumn turns all tree leaves on Biri Mountain red and yellow, while winter creates a crystal world with ice and snow. Not having a single protruding peak and always shrouded by dense fog, visitors can hardly know the true face of Benri Mountain.
Motuo, also named Metok or Medog County, is under the jurisdiction of Nyingchi Prefecture in southeast Tibet. Motuo, called Baimagang in Tibetan sutras, refers to “a hidden lotus flower”, giving the place a mysterious tone. Geographically, it lies in the lower reaches of Yarlung Tsangpo River and southern slope of Himalaya – Kangri Karpo Mountains and adjoins India.
Motuo has a mild subtropical climate. As the lowest area in Tibet Plateau, it is an ideal place in Tibet with the mildest climate, the most abundant rainfalls and the best preserved ecological environment. Known as Tibet’s Xishuangbanna, it is abundant with immense forests, alpine lakes and raging waterfalls.
Visitors can find various kinds of primitive forests in this region, ranging from forests of alpine frigid Zone to tropical zone. More than 80 kinds of precious and rare plants like camphor tree, ebony, Chinese yew and alsophila spinulosa grow here. No wonder it is famed as “Museum of Natural Vegetation”.
What is the best nature landscape in Nyingchi? For the photographer or nature lovers, it must be the vast sea of peach blossoms in the spring. To attract more travelers to enjoy the beautiful of Nyingchi peach blossoms and discover the spectacular culture of Nyingchi Prefecture, the Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival is held in the Peach Blossom Village and other places with vast peach blossoms in the annual spring usually from March to April.
The first season of Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival was held in 15 March, 2003. Till 2017, this grand peach blossom festival has been held for 15 seasons. The last season was started on 25 March, 2017 in Gala Village, Bayi Town, Nyingchi Prefecture.
