Shaoguan area belonged to Chu Kingdom in the Warring States Period (476BC-221BC). The place was named with ‘Shao’ since the Sui Dynasty (581-618), and in Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties it gained the name ‘Shaoguan’ for the government established passes here to collect taxes. Lying in the south part of the Nanling Mountains, this region has vast area of karst landform. Hilly area constitutes the main land of the city. The Danxia Landform is nominated for the red sandstone in the Mt. Danxia of Renhua County. The terrain is higher in the north and lower in the south.

Shaoguan has a long history of religion. There are Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity and Catholicism. There are more Buddhist and Taoist believers.

Nanhua Temple

The former temple of Huineng (the sixth patriarch of Zen Buddhism) and the location of his mummified remains. As such, the temple is an important pilgrimage site for practitioners of Zen Buddhism.

Danxia Mountains

Danxia Mountain is a world famous geopark, containing the largest, most beautiful scenic area in Guangdong. The mountain is situated in Renhua County, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Shaoguan City. The Danxia Landform of this mountain represents the typical formation of the over 1,200 Danxia Landforms found throughout the world. Covering an area of more than 280 square kilometers (69,190 acres), the mountain is composed primarily of red sandstone rocks.

The scenic area contains more than 680 various stone peaks, stone fortresses, walls, pillars and stone bridges. The stones have been formed over the eons by nature, many of which take the shape of the human body, birds and even animals. The numerous stones and peaks are rhythmically interspersed among the scenic spot, making it a sculpture garden of red sandstone rocks. Set against the blue sky, white clouds, jade waters, green trees and the colorful algae, the mountain becomes a picturesque painting.

Jinjiling

Jinjiling is 338 meters high. It has a name because it has a huge stone like a rooster.

Arrival method: Jinjiling is located in Pingshi Town. The houses in the town are basically built along the Jinjiling area. Therefore, you can walk to Jinjiling just by walking. You don’t have to take a bus. Go out to the railway station and go to Renmin Road. There is a large slope at the junction of Renmin Road and Jinji Road. You can enter the scenic spot along the slope and walk for about 15 minutes.

Yunji Mountain Reserve

At 1434 meters above sea level, Yunji Mountain is the highest mountain in the Pearl River Delta region and belongs to the provincial wildlife and nature reserve. The area is full of strange peaks and natural rock caves, rich in flora and fauna, and is a good place to camp in the wild. Now it has become a hot spot for outdoor sports enthusiasts to climb the mountain camping and training.

Nanling National Forest Park

Nanling national forest park is located in Ruyuan Yao Nationality Autonomous County and 8 kilometers from the bridge exit of Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway. The park covers area of 27300 hectares. It is the core zone of Nanling Mountain, the only preserved virgin forest in Guangdong and the oasis with the largest area in the areas with the same latitude in the world. The park has developed scenic spots including No.1 Peak in Guangdong (Shikengkong with altitude of 1902 meters), Water Loving Valley, Waterfall Groups and Small Yellow Mountain.

Arrival method: Every day at 12:00 noon, there is a bus between the Shaoguan bus station and the Nanling Forest Park. If you miss it, you can only take the road car.

Guangdong Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is located in Guangdong Ruyuan Yao Autonomous Dabu Town, from the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway in Ruyuan export 70kilometers. Canyon of up to 15 kilometers, more than 300 meters deep, belong to quartz sandstone. The original site of the Grand Canyon is a ravine in small basin, due to the Yanshan movement effects, makes the crust with block uplift of the expansion, and make partial massif rifting subsidence of the formation of rift valley. Be aware that the place is not really taken care of and that despite the various maps you will see here and there, you will only be able to access a very small part of the canyon, the rest being closed and under guard. The site is not really worth the trip unless you want to see a 100m high but very narrow waterfall.

Mei Pass

The site of Mei Pass has been significant since the Qin dynasty (221bce – 206ce) and its name probably dates from this early period. It was part of one of the five transport routes from the Yangtze valley to Nanhai in present-day Guangzhou. During the Tang (618–907), the site was variously called Qin Pass and Hengpu Pass. In 716, the Chancellor Zhang Jiuling constructed a 5 metres (16 ft) wide road through the pass as part of the trade route along the Gan River.

Arrival method: At the Shaoguan Railway Station, every day, there is CMB to Nanxiong. In Nanxiong County, transfer to the bus of Jiangxi’s Dayu to Meiling.
