The most holy land of Chinese Buddhism, Mt. Wutai lies in Wutai County in Xinzhou Region, Shanxi Province. It is rated on both the list of the first group of national scenic spots designated by the State Council, and the list of the Top 10 scenic spots in Shanxi Province. It is as famous as Mt.Emei in Sichuan Province, Mt.Putuo in Zhejiang Province, and Mt.Jiuhua in Anhui Province, all of which are renowned as the four sacred Buddhist Mountains. It covers an area of 2,837 square kilometers (1,095.4 square miles), and its five main peaks, positioned east, south, west, north, and in the middle, embrace one another with broad and plain terraces rather than forests on their tops. That is why it bears the name “Wutai Shan” (Mountain of Five Terraces). With the average altitude over 1,000 meters (over 3,281 feet), its apex, the summit of the northern peak which is famed as being the “Roof of Northern China”, reaches 3061.1 meters (10,043 feet). Besides the religious aspect, the beauty of rising and falling ridges of mountains, exotic rocks, crisscrossed gullies, crystalline waters and towering green forests also gives the mountain its reputation as a colorful and notable scenic resort.

The Twin Pogoda Temple (Shuang Ta Si), also known by the name ‘Yongzuo Temple’ (Yong Zuo Si), is located in the southeast of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. There are two 53-meter-tall pagodas standing in it, hence the name ‘Twin Pagoda Temple’. History records reveal that the temple and two pagodas were built under the Emperor Wanli’s order in 1608 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Each of the pagodas has 13 stories and is made entirely of bricks and stone. The exterior was sculptured in the shape of an octagon and decorated with the exquisite flying eaves. An internal staircase was added so that visitors can climb to the top of the pagoda and gaze far afield.
This temple is noted for its pair of 13-story octagonal pagodas, dating back some 400 years. These twin pagodas, which can easily be seen from much of Taiyuan, are often used as a symbol of Shanxi’s largest city. The two towers, made of brick and stone, are 53 meters in height. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase to the top of the western pagoda to enjoy a panoramic view over the city. Closed until September 2018.

Shanxi Cuisine (Jin Cai)
Jin is short for Shanxi Province. Jin Cai means the Shanxi Cuisine. When traveling in Taiyuan, Jin Cai should not be missed. The Shanxi Cuisine has a salty flavor accompanied by a little sweet and sour. The methods of cooking include deep-frying, stir-frying, quick-frying, grilling and braising. And the traditional dishes of Jin Cai include Ba Si Shan Yao (Chinese Yam in Hot Toffee), Guo Shao Yang Rou (Braised Mutton), Fu Ru Rou (Braised Pork with Pickled Bean Curd Sauce) and Tang Cu Yu (Sweet and Sour Fish).
Shanxi Noodles are definitely a local specialty and these can be prepared in several ways. Each kind cooked by a special method has a unique name and taste, such as the Fried Oats Noodle, Pulled Noodle, Mao Erduo (Cat’s Ear, for it takes the shape of a cat’s ear.), Sliced Noodle, and many more. You must taste the noodles yourself to discover how delicious they are.
The Taiyuan Noodle Restaurant at the junction of Da Nan Men (South Gate) and Yingze Dajie (Yingze Avenue) comes highly recommended. As you walk into the restaurant, you will see a pair of couplets saying, ‘Delicious noodles of the world are in China, China’s delicious noodles are in Shanxi’. The words are attributed to a Japanese gourmet who tasted the delicious noodles here.
Besides the Jin Cai and Shanxi Noodle, local snacks are plenty. The recommended breakfast includes Tou Nao and Taiyuan Yang Za Sui Tang (A tasty soup prepared from sheep offal).
Taiyuan Tou Nao, the most delicious local snack, literarily means Brain or Head. In fact, it is the mutton soup with yam and lotus root. The dish is full of flavor and is a nutritious food ideal for warding off winter colds.
The Tou Nao served in the Qing He Yuan Restaurant is the most tasty.
Qing He Yuan Restaurant: No. 97, Qiaotou Jie
Hao Gang Gang Mutton Soup Restaurant: at the north entrance of Liu Xiang, also near the entrance of Fuxi Jie.
This restaurant serves the reputed Taiyuan Yang Za Sui Tang. The long queue of customers in front of the restaurant proves just how popular their Hao Gang Gang Mutton has become.
Fen Jiu and Zhu Ye Qing are two wines that originated in Taiyuan and are the city’s most famous products.
Vinegar
Jinci Vinegar, another product that is unique to Taiyuan is famed throughout China. The vinegar was originally brewed in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC – 476 BC). The Mature Vinegar produced here was considered to be the best vinegar during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The Yi Yuan Qing Vinegar Workshop is famous for making the vinegar.
Duanmu Inkstone
Originating from the Duanmu Mountain 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from Wutai County, Duanmu Inkstone is another of the local specialties. The ink stone comes in three different colors, purple, black and green. The Purple ink stone is the most sought after of these and if you are interested in Chinese arts and crafts, it is a good idea to buy one to take home!
