Climbing to the top of East Peak of Mt. Huashan takes 4 to 6 hours. It has an altitude of 2,090 meters (6,857 feet), forming a platform for visitors to view the sunrise. An astronomical telescope is provided here. Sunrise is 5:00a.m.-6:00a.m. in spring, 4:30a.m.-5:20a.m. in summer, 5:00a.m.-5:20a.m. in autumn and 5:30a.m.-6:00a.m. in winter.
One well-known scenic spot, the Immortal’s Palm Peak, ranked as one of the Eight Scenic Wonders of the Xi’an, is located on the East Peak. It refers to the natural rock veins of the cliff, which look like a giant palm -print.
With an altitude of 2,160 meters (7,087 feet), the South Peak is pursue as the monarch of Mt. Huashan because it is the highest peak and also the highest peak among the Five Sacred Mountains of China. Visitors who summit South Peak are undoubtedly winners Looking around when standing at the peak, the surrounding landscapes are luxuriantly green; the Yellow River wanders far below and everything seems small. A legend goes that the wild geese returning from the south often landed at South Peak, giving the area the name Landing Wild Geese Peak.
West Peak has very high cliffs standing erect with an altitude of 2,086.6 meters (6,845 feet). There is a Taoist temple called Cuiyun Palace, before which a huge rock looking like a lotus flower comes into view, hence the name Lotus Flower Peak. There Are another seven rocks beside Cuiyun Palace, which is said to be the place where Chenxiang, a main character in the movie Lotus Lantern, ripped Mt. Huashan to save his mother, The Heavenly Goddess San Sheng Mu.
Middle Peak clings to East Peak and is in the center of East, South and West Peaks. There is a Taoist temple on the peak named Jade Maiden Temple. Legend has it that the daughter of Qin Mugong (569 – 621 BC) loved a man who was good at playing Chinese tung-hsiao (vertical flute) and she gave up the royal life to become a hermit who cultivated her spirituality here, hence the name Jade Maiden Peak. Today Jade Maiden Temple and Jade Maiden Basin for Shampooing can be found on the peak. Other scenic spots in Middle Peak include Rootless Tree and Sacrificing Tree, which have beautiful stories and add to the supernatural atmosphere of Middle Peak.
There are precipitous cliffs on all sides of North Peak, making it look like a flat terrace in the clouds, hence the name Cloud Terrace Peak. It is 1,614 meters (5,295 feet) high. Three sides are cliffs and one side is to the Ear-Touching Cliff, which is the fourth precipitous path where visitors can climb up only by pressing an ear close to the cliff. Almost halfway up the North Peak trees are luxuriantly green, creating a good rest spot.
Passing through the Heavenly South Gate, you will come to Plank Road. Many visitors regard it as the most dangerous and thrilling pass on the mountain. Rather than a “road”, it is just a suspended path, which is made by linking small carved holes to put the feet. The width is just 0.3 m (about 1 ft). The path is divided into three parts: upper, middle, and lower road. Visitors have to face toward the cliff and grasp the rope tightly in order to move forward with small steps. Many visitors are too afraid to try it as below the suspended path is a bottomless gulf.
When climbing over the Black Dragon Ridge, which is regarded as the only way to get to the other four peaks from North Peak, climbers arrive at Golden Lock Pass. It is customary to buy a golden-colored lock, and then lock it in the iron chains on both sides of the Golden Lock Pass to wish for the health and safety of friends and family. It is an amazing spectacle to see thousands of golden locks there. Within the mountain gate of Golden Lock Pass, a huge golden-colored lock of about 4 meters (about 4.37 yards) long and 1 .5 meters (about 1.64 yards) high stands in a big rock. It is made of pure copper and forged by 9,999 locks left by previous visitors. It is a popular photo site. This huge lock can only be opened by throwing coins – one coin represents the status of an ordinary person; three coins, a blessed person and nine coins a most blessed one. Golden Lock Pass is regarded as the throat to Middle Peak, East Peak, South Peak and West Peak.
Longmen Scenic Area is located in Longmen Town, which lies about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Hancheng City. Dragon Gate is a gorge along the Yellow River and is well-known as one of the “Small Three Gorges in Northern China”. It is said that only a divine dragon is able to jump over this gorge, which accounts for its title “Dragon Gate”. The story of the gorge goes on to say that it is the place where Da Yu, an ancient hero in prehistoric age of China, controlled floods, which accounts for its other nickname – “Yu Gate” (Yumen).
Steep cliffs surround Dragon Gate Gorge, giving it the appearance of a gate leading to and from the Yellow River. The gorge is very narrow, measuring only 80 meters (87.5 yards) in width, and forms a natural sluice. Here the Yellow River flows very quickly, pounds against the high mountains, and gushes out with the water making a loud roar. Further downstream, beyond the gorge, the river gradually broadens and its water streams slowly. When observed from afar, this area makes a great photo opportunity, with the great river flowing east, bringing with it an abundance of mist-covered rolling water.
Located in the northeast of Weinan City, Hancheng is about 230 kilometers (143 miles) away from the capital city Xi’an. It is the hometown of the world cultural celebrity Sima Qian as well as many other historical celebrities such as Zhao Wu, the Ministerial Scholar-Bureaucrat of the Jin State in the Spring and Autumn Periods (770 BC-476 BC), Wang Jie, the Prime Minister of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and Du Pengcheng, a noted writer of modern day China. It is thus known as the ‘Land of Literature and History’. It is filled with cultural and historical relics, of which Sima Qian Temple, Dang Village and the Confucius Temple are the most attractive scenic spots. Moreover, the folk Shehuo (a kind of folk performing arts) here should not be missed.
The ancient architectures here are distinctive, and Hancheng is indeed regarded as a natural ancient architecture museum. In addition to the Siheyuan (Courtyards) of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it features more than 140 ancient architectural buildings of the Tang, Song, Ming, Yuan and Qing Dynasties (618-1911). This place contains more than 20 of the ancient architectures of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), more than any other site in Shaanxi.
Lying in the northeast of Hancheng, Dang Village is about 1.5 kilometers (1,640 yards) west of 108 National Highway, and 3.5 kilometers (3,828 yards) east of the Yellow River. It is the largest, oldest and best preserved ancient stockade village ever excavated in Shaanxi.
Hancheng Confucius Temple in Dongxue Lane is the third largest shrine specially built for offering sacrifices to Confucius, a great thinker and educator in ancient China. He was respected by monarchs of many dynasties since Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 24 AD).
Sima Qian (145 – 90 BC), the famous historian and litterateur of China, is a native of Hancheng. He began to read ancient Chinese books and biographies when he was ten years old, including the works of Dong Zhongshu and Kong Anguo (the great litterateurs of China). At the age of 20, he started to travel across China to learn the various customs and collect Chinese legends. Several years later, he inherited from his father the position of Grand Scribes (Taishi Ling) to the Emperor and thus became in charge of astronomy, calendars and imperial books. Hereafter, he took on an ambitious project – writing Shi Ji (Records of the Grand Historian). He was sentenced to castration after defending Li Ling who surrendered to Hun. In spite of this cruel punishment, he finished Shi Ji, which is an unprecedented masterpiece.
