Weining is a small town in western Guizhou. It is the gateway to Caohai Lake, the main attraction in this part of Guizhou, and lies on the G326 highway. The trip from the Guizhou capital, Guiyang, involves trains and buses.

Weining is a bit of a muddy town and there’s not much to look at. It is populated by ethnic minority peoples and has a large market as its main draw. The older part of town is in the east and is worth a stroll, while in the north is a mosque and Muslim eateries.

Caohai Lake is a popular birdwatching site and is a 15-minute walk to the southwest of Weining. It is a nature reserve for its extensive wetlands and is home to many migratory birds in early spring (March) and in the fall (September/October). The black-necked crane is the highest profile bird here. You can hike around the shallow lake as well as punt on it.

Weining is a multi-ethnic autonomous county. In this land, there are 18 ethnic groups such as Han, Yi, Hui, Miao and Buyi. All ethnic groups co-exist in harmony and live in harmony, forming a large family of more than 1 million people.

Miao Nationality

Miao ethnic group has a population of 8,940,116 which is larger than most of minority groups in China. After immigration in a long history, today they live mainly in Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan, Hubei, Hainan Provinces and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture. They are divided into several branches, such as Black Hmong, White Hmong, and Striped Hmong.

Bouyei (Buyi) Nationality

They believe in many gods. There is a God for each Mountain; River, Lake or Pond; for each old and unusual tree, for megalith, caves, paddy field, and for when it rains or thunders, there are various gods. They also worship ancestors’ supreme might with each family setting niches in their home, holding activities during the Spring, Pure Brightness, and the Zhongyuan Festivals.

Besides that, as many families are of the same origin, they often worship again together, sacrificing and praying for peace and happiness.

Best Travel season

There is no heat in summer in the northwest of Yunnan, and there is no severe winter. The average temperature in summer is 25°C and the average temperature in winter is 4°C. Black-necked cranes will spend the winter in Caohai from the beginning of September in the lunar calendar to the third in the third year of the next year. Therefore, the winter season is the best travel season for Weining Caohai.

Consumption level

Northwest Guizhou is a popular tourist attraction. Ticket consumption is very low. Accommodation is also a lot cheaper than the popular attractions in southeastern Guizhou. In-depth visits are played for 4 or 5 days. The cost is basically maintained at around 600 yuan.

Attractions

Cao Hai Lake

Over 170 species of birds have been sighted at Cao Hai Lake. It’s most famous as a wintering ground for the Black-necked crane. Wintering birds begin to arrive in late October. Narrow boats paddled by local farmers can be hired near the lake’s main entrance . Rates are standard and posted, beginning at ¥120/hour. The Preserve police recently began to enable those rates more tightly, but some guidebooks have noted that tourists may have trouble securing the posted rate. One hour on the boat gives you enough time To wend your way through the marsh grass out into the center of the lake.

 Shimenkan

In the Shimenkan area, the most densely populated area in the northwest of Weining, the local Miao culture influenced the entire southwest region.

Kele archaeology site

The Kele archaeological site is a tomb group from the Warring States to the Han Dynasty. It has unearthed a large number of well-preserved ancient civilization sites that are full of Guizhou cultural features. It has been praised in the archaeological community by the “Yin Ruins of the Yelang Bronze Culture”.

 Yi Nationality Xiang Tian Tomb

Xiang Tian Tomb is unique to the Yi nationality and is shaped like a pyramid. It is praised by experts and scholars as “Oriental Gold Tower”.

Food

There are a handful of good restaurants and nooodle places down the street from the main entrance to the lake.
Weining is also known for its excellent cured ham.

Accommodation

Hotel with a good condition, room price is around 200 yuan. Near the bus terminal is the hotel’s densest place, a single room with a bathroom below $100. There are also several hotels on Yushi Road in the north of Caohai Scenic Area.

Shopping

Market days occur on days that end with 3, 6 or 9. There is no central market. Rather, farmers pour into the city and set up in a handful of areas.

Otherwise, there are three main fruit and vegetable markets in town, the largest near Caiyuan Lu and the mosque, one on the eastern edge of town off of Minheng Lu.
