Most of the Wenzhou buses are unsold tickets, automatic coin-operated, and the fare is 2 yuan. Make a change when you are riding.

In Wenzhou’s pedestrian streets, scenic spots and some densely populated areas, there are many manpower tricycles. Before you get on the bus, you should tell the boss about the price and explain where you want to go.

Jiangxin Island

An island in the middle of the Oujiang river that runs through Wenzhou. The island has an old pagoda and a new pagoda, large areas of garden and lakes, a water park and a theme park. The theme park is known for its ferris wheel which gives great views of both sides of the river and also a death-defying roller coaster. Make sure you buckle up tight.

Yandang Mountain

Located in Yueqing County of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, Yandang Mountain is one of the China’s top ten must-see mountains. Famous for its magnificent peaks, waterfalls and caves, it was named a World Geopark by UNESCO in 2005. With an area of 450 sq kilometers (about 173.75 sq miles), Mount Yandang is composed of eight scenic areas, most famous of which are the Three Best Wonders: the Spiritual Peaks, the Big Dragon Waterfall and the Spiritual Rocks.

The Spiritual Peaks (Lingfeng Peaks)

The Spiritual Peaks is at the east gate of Yandang Mountain. Climbing up along the Puxi Stream, one can easily find the Old Monk Rock. Facing to the southeast, the ‘old monk’ salutes with the hands folded. It’s so vivid that the rock has been considered one of the most significant scenic spots of the mountain. The sight of the peaks during the day is breath-taking and in the evening, is even more attractive. When night falls, with a little imagination, one can see many beautiful ‘pictures’ under the moonlight, such as ‘an eagle retracting its wings’, ‘a wife-and-husband peak’, ‘a rhinoceros looking at the moon’, ‘a love-sick maiden’ etc.

The Big Dragon Waterfall (Dalong Qiu)

Jumping down from Lianyun Peak, which is more than 190 meters (about 623 feet) high, the Big Dragon Waterfall runs into the Qingjiang River and finally into the sea. When there are heavy rains, The Big Dragon Waterfall conjures an image of a dragon flying swiftly upward and another one seething in the pond waters below. Thus, the name ‘dragon’ has been given to it. In fall and winter, the water flows down quietly and calmly. With the misty haze surrounding the falls, one can feel as if they are enjoying the marvels of heaven. No wonder the famous poet in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Jiang Shi, exclaimed that ‘the beauty of the Big Dragon Waterfall cannot be expressed in words.’

The Spiritual Rocks (Lingyan Rocks)

Among the Three Best Wonders of Yandang Mountain, the Spiritual Rocks is the most magnificent and forbidding. Like a three-storey building, the Spiritual Rocks Area can be divided into three ‘floors’. In the first ‘floor’, there are Lingyan Temple and the Small Dragon Waterfall; in the second, the Cave of Dragon Nose (Longbidong Cave) and the Cave of Clerestory (Tianchuangdong Cave); and in the third, the Valley of Crouching Dragon (Wolonggu Valley) and the Valley of Double Pearls (Shuangzhugu Valley). The whole area is so sublime that one is relieved of all anxiety, sorrow and pain upon entering. Besides the beautiful and grandeur scenery, the marvelous ‘flying person’ performance of ferry in the air also shows everyday.

There are five other scenic areas also worth visiting. The Immortal Bridge (Xianqiao) is well-known as a setting in fairy tales. The Wild Goose Lake (Yan Lake) gives Yandang Moutain its name (Yandang means ‘reed marsh for wild geese’). The Wonder-displaying Gate (Xiansheng Gate) is considered to be the steepest rock of the mountain. The Goat-horn Cave (Yangjiao Cave) embodies the Chinese traditional religion of Taoism. The Three-step Waterfall (Sanzhe pu) is among the most peculiar of all the waterfalls in Yandang Mountain because of the dead volcano found here.

Known for its unique character, Mount Yandang has been praised as ‘a famous mountain in the sea’, ‘an unsurpassed wonder in the world’. Peaks and water, caves and volcano, nature is such a genius to create this wonderful scenery.

Nanxi river

Situated in Yongjia County, Zhejiang Province, Nanxi River Scenic Area is adjacent to Yandang Mountain (a famous world geological park southeast of Wenzhou City) in the east and covers an area of 625 square kilometers (241.3 square miles). This national scenic area is the only one marked by the rural scenery of China. With its leisurely atmosphere and picturesque scenery, it is an ideal place for holiday and leisure and is praised as the Cradle of Landscape Painting of China.

Centered on Nanxi River, the area is a perfect combination of natural views, rural scenery and human landscape. It is famous for its water, rocks, waterfalls, ancient villages and shoals, and there are over 800 scenic spots scattered in the area. Generally speaking, the scenic area can be divided into seven parts, including Nanxi River, Daruoyan Rock, Water Rock, Sihai Hill and Tumen Gate. Furong Village

Most of the villages preserve complete historical features and many traditional cultural relics. Here, the visitors can learn about the evolution of farming and patriarchal clan in ancient China. Furthermore, the layout of most of the villages follows the unique traditional culture of China, including the astrology and geomantic omen. Of all the villages in the scenic area, Furong Village, located to the south of Yantou County (lying in the middle of the scenic area), is the oldest, with a history of over 1,200 years.

Wuyanling National Nature Reserve

The forest presents different kinds of beauty in each of the four seasons. In spring, the blooming flowers, singing birds and babbling brooks welcome you to join in their joy. In summer, the gentle breeze comforts you and cools your mind and spirit. In autumn, the sweetness of the ripe fruits will certainly make your mouth water. And in its warm winter, you can still enjoy yourself in this picturesque heaven on earth that nature has gifted us. The endless primary forest stretches on all sides as far as your eyes can see. There are 17 peaks more than 1,000 meters high (3,281 feet) including the highest summit – Baiyun Peak (White Cloud Peak), which is 1,611 meters (5,285 feet) above sea level. Feiyun Stream, the headwater of Feiyun River, the third largest river in Zhejiang Province, winds through the borders of the reserve. The unusual alpine peaks are waiting for you to explore and the spectacular landscape attracts many mountain climbers to seek adventure and reach great heights. Thanks to the lovely natural scenery, the forest attracts more and more tourists from home and abroad.

Baizhangji Waterfall & Flying Cloud Lake

The Baizhangji Waterfall Scenic Area has beautiful lakes and mountains and is especially famous for its waterfalls, which are divided into three sections from high to low. ‘The First Waterfall (Yi Ji)’ of 207 meters (about 680 feet) high is known as the ‘Number One Waterfall in China’. The second section of 85 meters (about 280 feet) high, called ‘The Second Waterfall (Er Ji)’, is divided into two folds by a rock corridor in the middle, like a waistband twining around the sable cliff. Here, the waterfall runs down like a curtain, hence it is named ‘Huaguoshan Water-Curtain Cave’.

Another scenic spot in Baizhangji Waterfall Scenic Area is the Celestial Summit Lake (Tianding Lake). It is clear and deep like a bright mirror and located in the Nantian Mountain at the top of the Baizhangji waterfall. In the center of the lake is an island looking like a natural carnelian inlaid in the lake.

Flying Cloud Lake Scenic Area, located in the middle reaches of Flying Cloud River, covers an area of 54.8 square kilometers (about 13,500 acres). On the surface of the lake you can see the vast mist-covered water and many sailing boats. At the bank you can see verdant trees and bamboos, among which the old villages are scattered.

Mentoring Bridge

The bridge is located in Taishun county and in Sixi Town, is the most famous Taishun lounge. The East River Bridge, North Jian bridge two Hongqiao type wooden arch bridge, known as the” world’s most beautiful bridges”.

Taishun Bridge

Taishun County has more than 900 covered bridges, many of them hundreds of years old, as well as a covered bridge museum.

Nanji Island

Nanji Island, one of the National Nature Reserves, China’s most beautiful island, National 4A-level scenic area, is also written as Nanji shan(mountain) in ancient times. It is located on the East China Sea, 30 nautical miles away from the mouth of Aojiang River in Pingyang County, Zhejiang Province, and is 50 nautical miles away from the urban area. Nanji Island is a tourist island and the largest of the 52 islands in Nanji Islands.

Food

Wenzhou dishes have a long history dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). There are over 250 delicious recipes based on sea food and using fish, shrimps, crabs and shells as their basic ingredients. They are cooked using some 30 different methods and appear beautiful with enticing aromas.

San Si Qiao Yu (Fish Boiled with Three Kinds of Shreds) is a traditional Wenzhou dish and is easy to cook. The fish is cut into pieces and boiled with shreds of chicken, hams and wood mushrooms. The tender and smooth fish meat is very appetizing and this dish is usually used to entertain friends and relatives on festivals by the locals.

Garlic Seasoned Fishskin is a popular dish among the locals. The basic ingredient is the skin of a kind of edible shark which the locals braise with quantities of garlic that can make the skin soft and tender. It is said the dish helps to expel toxin in the human body.

Double Tastes Crabs is a piece of cake cooked with crab meat and pork during both steaming and frying, leaving it with two distinct tastes, hence its name. The cake is firstly formed by putting fried crab meat on the shreds of pork to fry together in a pan; then is placed on a plate with another steamed crab meat decorated. The dish looks like a live crab and the meat tastes surprisingly fresh.

In addition, the locals have other special ways of eating sea food. For example, they dry the fresh yellow-fin tunas and cuttle fish or soak the crabs and jellyfish. They even eat the live river shrimps or oysters with a variety of seasonings including wine, sugar and ginger.

Accommodation

Wenzhou has a developed economy, and there are many places to stay in the city. There are many high-end hotels. Of course, the price of accommodation here is not cheap, so it is best to book a discounted price in advance.

Shopping

There are no token “Wenzhou” things that you need to buy (though Wenzhou is apparently known locally for high-quality shoes), but there are many things made in Wenzhou, so if you look and bargain well, you can buy them at very cheap prices. This section is helpful if you are looking for something that would be easy to find in a western city, but you are unsure of where to find it in a Chinese one.
