Zhenjiang, referring to the “Garrison of the River” in Mandarin, is a city with a history of 2,500 years. The city was once the provincial capital during the rule of the Republic of China.
With enriched heritage and culture, the city is often associated with a lot of fascinating folk mythologies happened in Chinese history. One of the most intriguing legends, “Tale of the White Snake”, was spread over generations in Chinese folklore, depicting a fantastic love story about a thousand-year-old snake spirit fighting an evil monk for her marriage to her human lover.
The other story circulated in Chinese history for Qin Shihuang, the first emperor in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.), trusted the Fengshui (Feng Shui or Fung Shwee), a Chinese ancient geomancy method. He believed in Fengshui measuring that the geography of Zhenjiang was too powerful to be under his control. Adopted his Fengshui adviser’s suggestion, the emperor ordered three thousands of prisoners to dig a tunnel along hills to intend diverting the superpower out of the town. However, the tunnel only drained the water away from the town but never destroy its soul, in which Zhenjiang eventually raised two emperors and a king after the Qin.

Best Travel season

Spring or autumn is the best time to visit Zhenjiang. The weather of Zhenjiang is quite similar to Suzhou and Nanjing – subtropical monsoon climate, which has four distinctive seasons. Summer is hot, winter is a little cold and wet. It has large amount of rainfall all the year round. The temperature is comfortable in spring and autumn when Zhenjiang has the most festivals and activities – every year’s December 31th is the time for praying activities of Jinshan Mountain Temple; The cherry flowers in Baotashan Park blossom during March and April, and there is the very popular temple fair. While in autumn, around the Mid Autumn Festival, Jiaoshan Mountain has the most popular Osmanthus Flower Festival in which the Food Festival will satisfy all your imagination about Zhenjiang food.

Consumption level

The consumption level of Zhenjiang is relatively low. There are accommodations for youth hostels with a price of around RMB 60. There are also star-rated hotels ranging from RMB 400-600 to RMB 100-200. The average restaurant consumes about 50-60 yuan. If you choose to travel by public transport, your consumption will not be very high. If you charter or take a taxi, transportation costs will be higher.

Xijindu Ancient Street

An ancient ferry crossing – heavily modified by contemporary restoration to create a more “ancient” feel. There are some interesting preserved medieval buildings and various shops and catering active tourists.

Jinshan Park

Located on the Northwest side of Zhenjiang and includes a Buddhist monastery and another large pagoda. The Buddhist temple complex and a large lake (complete with paddle boats available for rent) form the majority of the park.

Beigushan Park

It has paths lit with lanterns after sundown. The park is surrounded by great landscaping and the Yangtze River.

Nanshan Park

It includes a hill with various paths snaking up and down it. A large pagoda at the top of the hill offers great views of the city, the river, and the surrounding countryside. The climb is very easy and takes less than an hour. Many people barbecue at small pits next to a lake to the east of the park entrance.

Zhenjiang Vinegar Culture Museum

China Zhenjiang Vinegar Culture Museum is the first professional themed vinegar culture museum in China. It covers an area of 30 mu and has a building area of 4,000 square meters.

How to get there: Take the 138 bus and get off at Dantu Industrial Park or take the 100 bus and get off at Lucun Station. Or take a taxi from Zhongshan West Road for about half an hour. The taxi fare is about RMB 50.

Baohuashan Scenic Area

Baohuashan mountain scenic area has become national forest park in the decade, and is one of the holy places of Buddism in China. Amongst the mountain, there is 1500-year-old Longchang Temple, which is the biggest place to initiate into monkhood at present. In the past not only 70% monks and nuns in China come here to be initiated into monkhood, but also many from southeast Asia countries came here for pilgrimage and initiation. So the mountain is also called the No.1 mountain of Buddism discipline. Baohua mountain has a wonderful view, the Temple is all surrounded by the woods of ancient pines and green cypresses. “The mountain is like a lotus flower, the temple is at the center of it”. There are 9 profound grottos and 4 beautiful ponds in the mountain, you can also find the scarce Baohuayulan magnolia.

Food

Zhenjiang is known for producing the best vinegar in China. Most major cities situated nearby provide Zhenjiang vinegar whenever dumplings are served. Steamed dumplings with the famous vinegar can be found on almost every block in town.

Zhenjiang and nearby Yangzhou are the centres of “Zhen-Yang cuisine”, one of the major traditions of Chinese cuisine which is prized across China and known for its subtle and light flavours, refined techniques and the emphasis of fresh vegetable and freshwater fish, crustaceans and shellfish, including in particular freshwater crabs, prawns and fish.
