Introduction of Nianbaoyuze mountain

Located in Suohurima town of Jiuzhi County in Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, with the altitude of 5369 meters, Nianbaoyuze is the highest peak of Mountain Bayan Har, which was authorized as National Geopark in 2005. Adjacent to Aba County in Sichuan province, as the famous Deity Mountain at the junction of Sichuan province, Gansu province and Qinghai province, Nianbaoyuze has been circulating around the the story of King Gesar in Tibetan Epic. The spectacular ice and extremely steep cliff cover it a veil of mystery.

Nianbaoyuze, also known as Guoluo mountain, is part of Mountain Bayan Har. According to the local legend, Nianbaoyuze is greatly respected and adored because it is the cradle of civilization of Golok tribes.

Nianboyuze mountains are 40 km long and 25 km wide, combined by numerous peaks with altitude of over 4,000 meters, the main peak of 5369 meters. On the mountain, there are a great number of lakes formed by melted snow. Besides well-known Fairy Lake, Lake Vamp, there are Rigamacuo Lake, Martha Lake, Maridang Lake and so on. There are over 300 various lakes in total and people count it as 360 in total for symbol of auspiciousness. It is said that the lakes were aggregated by Highness WenCheng’s tears of home sickness when she went to Tibet and passed by here.

Climate Condition Nianbaoyuze mountain

Changing weather in Nianbaoyuze is the most mysterious. The average temperature is 10 ℃ in July and August. People can experience the changes of four seasons between Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter nearby Nianbaoyuze. In the chilly early morning, under the starry sky, numerous snowflake flying down, the whole scene is like in dead winter. A red sun slowly rising from the east, the whole mountain is filled with fog. Soon the golden sun sheds on earth, and the sky is blue and cloudless. In the morning, the mountain is overcast with heavy clouds and then rain pours down; at noon the sky becomes clear, and it becomes really hot like in hot summer under the scorching sun, max up to 27 ℃. The temperature difference between day and night is obvious, and the annual average rainfall is 764.4 mm; in the afternoon, the wind suddenly blows everywhere, thunder follows lightning, and hail falls from the sky; in the evening, the sun sets toward west and prairie fully becomes tranquil like before. Nianboyuze uncovers its mysterious veil, like a pretty girl standing before people gracefully, kindly, and peacefully. Deity Mountain, Nianboyuze is famous for its continuous peaks, snowy and silver-like mountains, winter thunder, summer snow, heavy wind and singing stones, shining moon and starry sky.

Climbing Route of Nianbaoyuze mountain

The scenic area, Nianboyuze has not been developed fully, so tourists must take off-road vehicles or trucks from Jiuzhi County. The cost travelling through the scenic area is about CNY 1200 by off-road vehicle. Generally it is not enough to take one day to visit Nianboyuze, so tourists need to bring camping alpine hiking equipment. Windproof alpine tents and sleeping bags which resist temperatures of -15 ℃ are necessary.

After arriving at Mountain Nianbaoyuze, the climbing activities usually take 5 to 7 days. Tourists can go from the provincial capital Xining by bus, passing by Tai Wu Spa (Machen), and will arrive at Jiuzhi County by 875 km. Upon arrival at Jiuzhi County, tourists have to transfer transportation tool to animal-made ones, after 60 km trek, and they can reach the climbing camp site at southeastern main peak at the foot of Nianboyuze. Tourists can also go south down 15 km passing by Jiuzhi County from Machen, and arrive at the camp site located at the northern foot of the main peak. Climbers from inner land can go to Jiuzhi County from Aba Prefecture in Sichuan.

Climbing Schedule of Nianbaoyuze mountain

Day1: Chengdu–Wenchuan–LiCounty–Prairie in Longri Prefecture–Aba County(3290 m)

In the morning, tourists will start the trip, passing by Li County on Duwen highway. They will have lunch on road, through Zhegu mountain tunnel, passing by Longri Prefecture Prairie, arrive at Aba Prefecture and have dinner there. The whole trip needs around 9 hours of driving.

Day 2: Aba County–Jiuzhi in Qinghai–Nianbaoyuze(the front door of the scenic spot)–BC(4050 m)

After breakfast, tourists will start the trip and arrive at Nianbaoyuze around 2 hours of driving. Along Fairy Lake and Vamp Lake, tourists can appreciate the beautiful scenery of flower sea in summer. It will take 5 hours for them to walk light to the camp site.

Day 3: BC (4050 m)

At camp site, the guider will arrange adaptive training of high altitude and basic climbing techniques training. Accommodation at BC 2 camp site.

Day 4: BC–C1(4050 m–4800 m)

Tourists will start the trip from BC camp site, and take around 7 hours arriving at C1 camp site. Accommodation at C1 camp site.

Day 5: C1–climb to the summit–BC(4800 m–5369 m)

Tourists will start the trip from C1 camp site and are forbidden to climb to the summit after 1 PM. After reaching the summit, tourists will take a good rest at C1 camp site and return back BC camp site.

Day 6: BC–the front door of the scenic spot–Aba County

After breakfast, tourists will decamp, walk light back to the front door of the scenic spot, get on the bus waiting for them and visit Tibetan temple along the trip. They will have a big dinner party after arriving at Aba County in the afternoon. Accommodation at Aba County.

Day 7: Aba County–Chengdu

After breakfast, tourists continue their trip on same way to enjoy the charming scenery of prairie in summer, have lunch on road and arrive at Chengdu in the afternoon.
