Introduction of Sanfeng Peak of Mt. Siguniang

Located at the junction of Xiaojin County(in Aba Prefecture in Sichuan Province) and Wenchuan County, 235 km from Chengdu, adjacent to Wolong National Nature Reserve and Miyaluo, Mountain Siguniang(guniang means girl and Siguniang means four girls) is the important standard of Jiuzhai Valley tourism loop, combined by four continuous peaks. From north to south, the four peaks are lined up within the range of 3.5 km. They are Yaoguniang(the youngest girl), Sanguniang(the third girl), Erguniang(the second girl), Daguniang(the oldest girl) with the altitude of 6250 meters, 5355 meters, 5276 meters, 5025 meters respectively, from which Yaoguniang is the highest peak in Aba Prefecture in Sichuan Province. The four peaks are all year round covered by snow, like four pretty girls standing on Changping Valley and Haizi Valley.

There are dozens of snow-covered mountains of over 5000 meters surrounding Mountain Siguniang, and the climbing resources are very abundant. Yaoguniang is the most slim and the most beautiful peak, facing the “King of Shushan”, Mountain Gonaga(with the altitude of 7556 meters), and is titled as the “Queen of Shushan” and “Oriental Alps”. As the second highest peak in Sichuan Province, Yaoguniang is covered with white snow all year round. With white clouds and light haze, roots of trees on the peak is thick and the summit goes directly into sky. Under the mountain there is grassland of over 5000 square meters. With all kinds of flowers growing on the grassland, Yaoguniang is the ideal place for climbing and adventure. Beside Yaoguniang, Sanguniang, which is an experience level for primary technical snow-covered mountain climbing, with the altitude of 5355 meters is a good choice for entry-level climbers who have already finished conquering DaFeng and ErFeng.

Climate condition of Sanfeng Peak of Mt. Siguniang

Siguniang mountain area is located in the transition region from subtropical monsoon climate to the continental plateau climate. Due to the weather is cool in summer and cold in winter on the plateau terrain, and because of year-round dry, low rainfall and annual precipitation of 1100 to 1600 milliliters, the precipitation is mainly in the rainy season (in May). The mountain natural vertical band is very representative. The temperature changes rapidly, four seasons are not very obvious, but the daily range of temperature is obvious, sometimes up to more than 20℃.The annual evaporation is 1500 millimeters, the frost-free period is 220 days, the annual average temperature is 12.2 °C, and the annual lighting is 2214 hours. Mountain Siguniang is a typical plateau climate, such as cool morning and evening, midday heat, starry night, as well as blue sky, white clouds and fresh air. However, due to the high altitude, there will be different degrees of altitude sickness for some people.

Day 1:

In the morning: tourists gather at 7 AM and 8 AM start the trip on time, and arrive at Dujiangyan, Yingxiu, Wolong and Balang mountain. Tourists have lunch at Gengda town and continue the trip to Rilong town(with the altitude of 3100 meters) located at the foot of Mountain Siguninag. The whole trip is 230 km, taking 6 hours, and the road condition is good for driving. Tourists arrive at Rilong town around 4 PM, begin discussing climbing skills and practice with technical equipment.

Day 2:

Rilong—Lamasery (3400 meters)—Erdao Valley– Sequoias Garden–Niupengzi (3800 meters)– Small Pass(4000 meters)–BC Camp Site on SanFeng(4400 meters)

After breakfast, tourists go into Changping Valley with light belongings. From Lamasery tourists continue their trip to camp site on foot with the belongings carried by horse. Along the trip the scenery is mainly snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, forests and mountains shrubs. Tourists can see majestic Pomiao Peak, colored mountains and sun-moon-like lake sparkling like a majestic mirror. Tourists will have lunch on road at Niupengzi and do some adaptive training for high altitude of 4400 meters.

Day 3:

Camp Site on SanFeng—Crosscut Band—PingTai(4600 meters)–Small Pass(5000 meters) –Gravel Slope—climb to the peak(5355 meters)—Camp Site on SanFeng—Rilong town

Climbers should get up at 3: 00 AM, and start the climbing at 4: 00 AM. Climbers will reach the summit by 7 hours. Climbers who cannot reach the summit have to go from BC camp site and finish climbing before the noon.

Day 4:

Rilong–Chengdu

Tourists get up at 8 AM and after breakfast go back Chengdu by the same way.

In 2002, Sichuan XueFeng climbing team firstly ascended to the summit and later many climbing teams have climbed to the peak every year.
